The military memoir by Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Jack Jacobs, USA (Ret.) has won the 2010 Colby Award.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100203/DC48770)

Named for the late Ambassador and former CIA Director William E. Colby, the Colby Award recognizes a first work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a significant contribution to the public's understanding of intelligence operations, military history, or international affairs.  The $5,000 award will be presented by Tawani Foundation in association with the Pritzker Military Library on October 22, 2010 at Chicago's Palmer House Hotel, in partnership with the Library's 2010 Liberty Gala (pritzkermilitarylibrary.org). At the same time, the $100,000 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing will be presented.  The 2010 recipient will be announced via live webcast from the Library on June 21, 2010.

In his memoir, If Not Now, When? (Berkley, 2008), Jacobs describes his childhood in post-World War II New York City, his experiences at Rutgers University where he joined the ROTC program, and how that decision eventually led him to his service in Vietnam.  As an advisor to a Vietnamese infantry battalion, Jacobs was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the lives of 13 allied soldiers during an intensive firefight despite severe wounds.

"I am honored that my book has been chosen for an award associated with William Colby," said Jacobs.  "His legacy stands as a model for all members of our Armed Forces, past and present."

"This is an important piece of history... a story of extraordinary service in combat on the battlefield and in Washington," said William E. Butterworth III, the #1 Wall Street Journal and New York Times best-selling novelist who writes as W.E.B. Griffin, on behalf of the Award Selection Committee.  "Bill Colby would be very proud of Colonel Jacobs' fine memoir."

In addition to the Medal of Honor, Jacobs' distinguished military record includes two Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars.  Following two tours in Vietnam, he served on the faculties of the National War College in Washington, DC and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He retired from the Army in 1987 and had a successful career on Wall Street.  He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a military analyst for NBC/MSNBC.

BNA Books, a division of specialized news and information publisher BNA, announced today the publication of Privilege Issues in the Age of Electronic Discovery, 2009 Edition.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090529/DC24463LOGO)

The second in BNA Books' three-part E-Discovery portfolio series, Privilege Issues in the Age of Electronic Discovery, 2009 Edition is updated to explain how the nature and scope of the attorney-client privilege and work-product protection have been impacted by technology generally and electronic discovery in particular. The costs and burdens of dealing with electronic discovery are significant, and companies spend many hours coping with the complicated problems that ensue. The costs to review documents for privilege are staggering, and the volume and different forms of electronic discovery make it easier than ever to inadvertently produce privileged documents.

This portfolio explores these unique issues relating to privilege in e-discovery and provides practical guidelines and comprehensive analysis of the law, including:

  • Inadvertent production and risks of waiver of privilege
  • Expectation of privacy
  • Practical guidelines for dealing with privilege issues
  • Analysis of new Federal Rule of Evidence 502 and cases construing the Rule, and practical advice to avoid waiver claims

This book begins with an introduction to the relevant privileges and protections, each of which were developed prior to the computer age. The portfolio then describes in detail the far-reaching implications of technology on these fundamental tenets of the legal profession, examining privilege as it relates to the reasonable expectation of privacy and related ethical issues, waiver, privilege logs, the crime-fraud exception, experts, litigation hold notices, and litigation support databases.

The author, David J. Lender, Duke University (BA 1990, JD 1993), is a partner in the litigation department of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and head of the firm's e-discovery task force.

BNA is a leading private publisher of news and information products for professionals in law and business. In addition to Privilege Issues in the Age of Electronic Discovery, 2009 Edition, BNA's Book Division publishes Electronic Discovery Practice Under the Federal Rules, 2008 Edition (first volume in BNA Books' E-Discovery portfolio series); Preserving Electronically Stored Information: A Practical Approach (third volume in BNA Books' E-Discovery portfolio series); Discovery of Electronically Stored Information: Surveying the Legal Landscape; The Sedona Principles; and other titles in legal specialties. Detroiters once again proved that they are super supporters of the local community by raising over $22,000 last night at an event held at Art Van Furniture to benefit S.A.Y. Detroit ("Super All Year") Charity. Five hundred people came to hear Mitch Albom - best-selling author and popular radio and television broadcaster- speak about his best selling book Have a Little Faith and why he formed S.A.Y. Detroit Charity in 2006 during the Super Bowl to help the homeless in Detroit.

"With the power of the pen and microphone, Mr. Albom has brought voice to the voiceless," stated Gary Van Elslander, President of Art Van Furniture. "He has focused attention on the many Detroiters who are struggling everyday to meet the basic needs of shelter, food and medicine."

The evening began with Albom's live broadcast on WJR Newstalk 760 from the Art Van store in Warren where Mr. Van Elslander announced that they will match donations up to $10,000. Later Albom talked about the story behind his new nationally acclaimed book, and the progress of his important charity.

Pastor Henry Covington, the lead minister of I Am My Brother's Keeper church in Detroit, joined Albom to wrap up the event for open questioning. The church and minister served as an inspiration for Albom's new book.

Donations will continue to be accepted throughout the week.  This marks one of the many charity events Art Van Furniture hosts throughout the year to benefit charities throughout Michigan during these tough times.

The event occurred on the heals of Art Van Furniture's recent fundraising and donations to Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, including 50 mattress sets, bed frames, night stands and dressers for the homeless shelter, which partners with S.A.Y. Detroit Charity.
