For anyone who currently supports the U.S. troops overseas yet questions the legitimacy of the war itself, they may find a parallel to war in Ancient Greece. In his new release, "Alcibiades: Fact, Fiction, Farce" (published by Trafford), author Jack Meyer reconstructs the life of Alcibiades, a man who uniquely impacted classical Athens, and uses the Greek experience as an analogue for a critique of today's American foreign policy.

The populace of Athens held varied opinions about Alcibiades, a handsome boy who exhibited a devious and audacious personality. Was he just a troublemaker with an attitude or would this spunky youth grow up to do something great? Based on historical record, orphaned Alcibiades grew up in the household of Pericles - the builder of the Parthenon, was Socrates' favorite student and was immensely handsome and rich.

"Alcibiades: Fact, Fiction, Farce" tells the story of the stunning career of this brilliant tactical military commander ending with the Peloponnesian War in which Athens was inconceivably defeated by Sparta after 27 years. He was a persuasive orator and consummate traitor who switched sides three times during the war. Alcibiades' misdeeds and long-time relationship with Socrates are said to have led to the great philosopher's execution at the end of the war. The city's own favorite son, this product of the Golden Age, was a man as morally corrupt as he was convincingly eloquent. Meyer writes:

"Straightening, Alcibiades lisps, 'Men of arms, it is our day to show everyone that we are Athenians. Affirm your loyalty to your mother city. Cherish unto death the privilege to defend to the utmost. We are the warriors of the world that all barbarians must fear. Life or death, we fight for liberty. No tyranny can prevail against us. Onto Victory!' The effect is electric, his unique speaking skills impressive. A small crowd has gathered and is duly amazed. This most good looking youth is clearly destined for a place before the Assembly."

He has previously written "The Odyssey of the Western Spirit: From Scarcity to Abundance" and "Alcibiades: A Play in Three Acts." When Eugene Ugrumov was growing up, one of his favorite fairy tales was that of a Russian boy and his magical horse. His love for the story inspired him to share it with the world, and his book The Little Horse Gornok: Russian Fairy Tale (published by AuthorHouse) was born.

Meet Ivan, the youngest of three brothers living with their father on a Russian wheat farm. The farm is their livelihood, and when an unknown creature begins tromping around in the fields at night, Ivan is the only brother who succeeds in finding the culprit.

What he discovers is a mysterious and magical horse, rustling in the wheat. The horse has pearl hooves and a golden mane. In exchange for her freedom, the mare offers Ivan three horses; two of them beautiful and the third a deformed, humble horse he names Gornok.

Gornok and Ivan soon become the closest of friends. When Ivan's brothers attempt to steal the two prized foals, he and Gornok take a journey to find them and end up at the feet of the almighty Tsar, who offers Ivan a job in the royal stables. What seems like the ideal opportunity soon turns into a taxing venture as the Tsar begins sending Ivan on almost impossible quests for mysterious creatures. If he returns empty handed, the Tsar will have him beheaded.

Ivan travels the Russian landscape on the wise and trusty steed's back. They ride through forests and over oceans and always, just in the nick of time, return triumphant. But Ivan soon falls in love with the Tsar's beautiful bride to be, and they must stall the wedding if their love is to prevail. Ivan and Gornok face their most difficult challenge yet and must find a way to ruin the Tsar before it's too late and Ivan's true love is lost to him forever.

The Little Horse Gornok is a delightful fairy tale full of magic and mystery and is sure to dazzle readers of all age with its whimsical charm.

Eugene Ugrumov was born in the town of Chita, Siberia, in 1937. On winter Russian nights, he would tell his granddaughter, Anastassia Reznik, the original tale of The Little Horse Gornok. It was only fitting that Reznik helped edit Ugrumov's book version of the fairytale. This is Ugrumov's first book.

WonderCon, one of the country's most popular and well-attended comic book conventions, boasts an impressive guest list for the annual event being held in San Francisco on Friday through Sunday April 2-4, 2010. WonderCon is produced by the same organization that produces the world-renowned Comic-Con International in San Diego.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100324/DC76382)

Guests at WonderCon will take part in programs and panel discussions that spotlight their career and contributions to the comic book and popular arts industries. Many will also be available for autographing sessions. Those scheduled to appear include:

Murphy Anderson: One of comics' most respected inkers, Anderson is also known for his stunning pencils on Hawkman, Adam Strange, and Atomic Knights. Anderson's long career in comics -- dating back to the Golden Age -- includes the Buck Rogers syndicated comic strip and a long stint producing PS, the Preventive Maintenance magazine for the U.S. Army.

Sergio Aragones: As one of MAD magazine's longest-running cartoonists and the creator of that popular dim-witted barbarian Groo, Sergio Aragones is one of WonderCon's most popular guests. Sergio recently helped revive the DC western hero Bat Lash in a new miniseries and co-wrote Will Eisner's The Spirit with frequent collaborator and fellow WonderCon guest Mark Evanier. Most recently, the man some call the world's fastest cartoonist ventured into the popular world of The Simpsons, becoming a regular featured writer/artist in Bart Simpson Comics.

Peter S. Beagle: His extraordinary body of work -- including A Fine And Private Place, The Last Unicorn, Tamsin, and the award-winning "Two Hearts" -- has made author Peter S. Beagle an American fantasy legend.  He also wrote the animated versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Last Unicorn, plus the fan-favorite "Sarek" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Starting in April 2010, IDW Publishing will release a six-issue adaptation of The Last Unicorn, to be followed by an adaptation of A Fine and Private Place.

Max Brooks (appearing courtesy of Avatar Press): The author of two bestsellers, The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z, Max Brooks has also written for Saturday Night Live, for which he won an Emmy. His first graphic novel, The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks, was released in 2009. The son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, Max is completely dedicated to the cause of raising awareness on the issue of zombie survival.

Michael Chiklis (appearing courtesy of IDW Publishing): Perhaps best known for his portrayal of Detective Vic Mackey on the groundbreaking television drama The Shield, as well as his roles as Ben Grimm, the Thing, in the Fantastic Four movies and his starring roles in the TV series The Commish and Daddio, Michael Chiklis is currently venturing into the world of comic books. Along with Anny Simon Beck and Marc Andreyko, he is launching Pantheon, a dark and stylized story of ancient Greek gods returning to a ravaged, chaotic near-future Earth, where they battle for the fate of mankind. The five-issue series pits Zeus' fellow gods against Titans in an epic battle of good versus evil and debuts from IDW Publishing in Spring 2010.

Frank Cho: Award-winning cartoonist Frank Cho started his comics career with the syndicated strip Liberty Meadows. He eventually took his popular strip to comic book form, published by Image Comics. He has also produced work for Marvel Comics, including New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, and Hulk, and Dynamite Entertainment's Jungle Girl.

Amanda Conner: With a comics career that started at Marvel and Archie in the late 1980s, Amanda Conner worked for Claypool Comics on Soulsearchers and Company and for Harris on Vampirella in the 1990s. She's best known as the penciller on DC's Power Girl, co-written by fellow WonderCon special guest Jimmy Palmiotti (with Justin Gray). She also illustrated the Supergirl feature in Wednesday Comics, featuring Krypto the Super Dog and Streaky the Super Cat.

Darwyn Cooke: Writer/artist Darwyn Cooke is best known for his work at DC Comics, including Catwoman, Will Eisner's The Spirit, and the Eisner Award-winning series DC: The New Frontier, which was turned into an animated movie in 2008. His current project is a series of graphic novels published by IDW based on Richard Stark's legendary Parker books. The first, The Hunter, premiered at Comic-Con this year, while the second -- an adaptation of The Man with the Getaway Face -- will debut in 2010.

Colleen Doran: Illustrator, film conceptual artist, cartoonist, and writer Colleen Doran boasts published works numbering in the hundreds. She has illustrated the works of Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Warren Ellis, Anne Rice, J Michael Straczynski, Peter David, and Tori Amos. Her credits include Sandman, Wonder Woman, A Distant Soil, Legion of Superheroes, Teen Titans, Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Tori Amos: Comic Book Tattoo, and many more.

Mark Evanier: Comics, animation, TV, and blog-writer Mark Evanier comes back to WonderCon to host a bevy of panels for comics-loving fans of all ages. Known for his work with Jack Kirby (his art book Kirby: King of Comics won the 2009 Eisner Award for Best Comics-Related Book) and Sergio Aragones (he does something on Groo, but no one is quite certain what it is), Evanier brings his incredible wealth of knowledge of comics and pop culture to light each and every day on his blog at www.newsfromme.com.

David Finch: A fan-favorite artist known primarily for his work at Marvel, David Finch started his comics career at Top Cow on Cyberforce. He went on to illustrate The New Avengers at Marvel, along with the relaunch of Moon Knight and the Ultimate Universe-changing event series Ultimatum, written by Jeph Loeb. Starting at the age of 18, he began a lifetime career as a voice-over actor doing over 400 Warner Bros. cartoons. His radio career started with him appearing in a small part, on the Jack Benny Show and culminated a few years later with actually replacing Benny with the Stan Freberg Show on the CBS Radio Network. During the same time period he helped create the award-winning children's program Time For Beany (Beany & Cecil), which received an Emmy for Best Children's Show three years in a row. March 17th may have been St. Patrick's Day, but for those in attendance at The Help Group's Teddy Bear Tea at the Four Seasons LA at Beverly Hills, the day was "An Affair of the Heart." As keynote speaker, acclaimed philanthropist, family advocate, author and psychologist, Dr. Cheryl Saban, shared the powerful and thought-provoking message of her book What is Your Self-Worth?: A Woman's Guide to Validation.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090413/DC98260LOGO)

For the second consecutive year, The Teddy Bear Tea was graciously hosted by Nadine Schiff-Rosen, who serves on The Help Group's Circle of Friends Philanthropic Board with her husband, Fred Rosen. "I've come to know The Help Group for its commitment to leading the way for young people who are facing challenges," she said.  "Thank you for being here today to support this wonderful organization."

Tea co-hosts Teddi Cole and Julia Baumgartner spoke with great warmth and enthusiasm about their experiences as parents of children who attend The Help Group's Summit View School.  Tea co-host Therese Gamba introduced The Help Group's Opportunity Fund, which provides scholarships and support for young people with special needs served by The Help Group – some of whom have been victims of abuse and neglect, come from the foster care system or from economically disadvantaged circumstances.

Describing the event as a veritable "Power Tea," Dr. Barbara Firestone, Help Group President & CEO, said, "There's a real energy in this room today.  It's the power of commitment to kids and giving back and to ensuring that all children have brighter futures."  Dr. Firestone announced the September 2010 opening of The Help Group's new state-of-the-art autism center, which is dedicated to education, research, parent & professional training and outreach. She also spoke of The Help Group's robust efforts in recognition of National Autism Awareness Month in April. For more information, please visit www.thehelpgroup.org.

Parent speaker, Heather Brezny, whose five-year-old son, Grant, attends The Help Group's Village Glen School, spoke movingly about the difficulties faced by her family, as Grant struggled with his developmental delays, and the feelings she experienced when he was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. With great pride, she shared the significant strides that Grant has made and said, "I truly believe finding The Help Group was the turning point in Grant's life."  It was a touching moment when Grant appeared on stage to present a bouquet to his mother.

The afternoon was highlighted by two heartwarming performances from The Help Group Children's Choir, whose musical talents drew tremendous applause from the crowd.

In her keynote address, Dr. Saban delivered a wake-up call for women to claim their own self-worth, take responsibility for the outcomes in their lives and become change makers, both locally and globally. "We need to value ourselves, own our opinions, let our own lights shine and embrace the fact that we do have a valid, viable and highly capable voice, and we do deserve a seat at the grown-up table." Dr. Saban also discussed the recent establishment of her Women's Self-Worth Foundation, which provides grants to organizations that work toward the empowerment and advancement of women.

At the conclusion of the afternoon, Dr. Saban graciously signed books for an appreciative audience. The Help Group's Teddy Bear Tea was truly "An Affair of the Heart."  For photos, please visit The Help Group's Web site.

During the stock market crash of 2008, many people saw their retirement savings slashed by 40% or more. The state of the current global economy and the fall of the U.S. dollar make Wall Street an insecure place for retirement funds. At the same time, Social Security is running out of money because people are living much longer than they did when the program originated. Additionally, Medicare is expected to run out of funds in less than a decade. These elements conspire to create the perfect storm in which many at or near retirement will find themselves in dire financial straits. What can those in this situation do to make sure they don't spend their retirement struggling financially?

Business coach, speaker, and award-winning writer Nick Usborne makes $4,000 a month working two to three hours a week writing about his interest in coffee. While he doesn't work in the coffee industry, he can share his passion with others who are looking to learn more about this topic.

For a minimal investment of time and money, people can earn money for retirement easily, even if they're already working full-time.

Usborne can tell your audience how to make money by answering:

  • What can I write about that will interest people?
  • How can I easily build a website?
  • Is it hard to promote a website?

When Eugene Ugrumov was growing up, one of his favorite fairy tales was that of a Russian boy and his magical horse.

New Age Lies Revealed
March 28, 2010

After months of theological debates with his good friend Mike, Neil Reid was inspired to write his first Christian apologetics book titled, They Were Not Conversations with God. He was dismayed by Mike's enthusiasm for and acceptance of the ideas put forth by Neal Walsch's well-known New Age book, Conversations with God, in which Walsch claims that the devil is not real and that one does not have to go through Jesus Christ to have a personal relationship with God.

Reid used detailed Scriptural evidence to support his arguments against Walsch and created an outline, which he presented to Mike during their religious conversations.

That outline has since been transformed into They Were Not Conversations with God. Reid believes that his book can be utilized by wavering Christians, like his friend Mike, who may have become disenchanted with Christianity and enamored with New Age beliefs. He also thinks that it can be of great use to Christian evangelicals, including clergymen and religious scholars. The book is one-of-a-kind, because it is written in a manner that will appeal to theology students and their professors, but remains comprehensible to the average reader, in that it is short and user-friendly.

Reid says that the one thing that all of his readers should take away from this book is that "New Age religion, as Walsch has conveyed it, is not from God, but is rather a deceptive, demonic, gross distraction from the only way to a proper and eternal relationship with God, which is through Jesus Christ."

OfficeMax® (NYSE: OMX), a leader in office products and services, and Simon & Schuster's Children's Publishing will make some lucky teachers' days this year by surprising them with classroom supplies and a visit from a popular children's book author. On behalf of OfficeMax's "A Day Made Better" cause, the companies plan to surprise extraordinary teachers at Title 1 schools with more than $1,000 in school supplies presented by local OfficeMax associates and accomplished children's literary authors. Simon & Schuster first participated in the cause in October 2009 and has selected to expand its involvement in 2010 to call attention to the issue of teacher-funded classrooms and encourage support for teachers nationwide.

"We're pleased to have the support of Simon & Schuster's Children's Publishing to help raise awareness and generate widespread support for teachers nationwide," said Bob Thacker, senior vice president of marketing and advertising for OfficeMax. "We are deeply committed to supporting teachers and their classrooms and are excited to include renowned children's authors in our classroom surprises."

Simon & Schuster's 2009 participating authors included Mac Barnett, author of The Brixton Brothers series, Sarah Rees Brennan, author of The Demon's Lexicon trilogy, Jon Scieszka, author of the SPHDZ and Trucktown series, and Scott Westerfeld, author of Leviathan. Expanding participation in 2010, Simon & Schuster children's authors will join OfficeMax throughout the year to surprise a teacher during their ongoing book tours and donate copies of their latest book to the classroom receiving the "A Day Made Better" award.

"It's an honor to be working with OfficeMax to support its 'A Day Made Better' cause and enable our children's authors to give back to teachers and their communities," said Paul Crichton, director of publicity, Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing. "We look forward to helping generate support for teachers and reward them for their incredible contributions in the classroom."

"A Day Made Better" was founded by OfficeMax in response to the fact that teachers are now spending on average $1000 out-of-pocket annually on classroom supplies to offset budget shortfalls. This figure was first cited by a National Education Association survey in 2005 and confirmed by an OfficeMax survey of teachers in June 2009. Since 2007, OfficeMax has presented over 3,500 teachers with a year's supply of classroom materials on behalf of "A Day Made Better" to honor teachers for demonstrating passion, dedication and innovation in the classroom and create awareness of teacher out-of-pocket spending. As a result, OfficeMax has helped garner donations for more than 10,000 classrooms through OfficeMax's nonprofit partner, Adopt-A-Classroom.

Borders® is committed to helping educators beat the budget crunch with a 30 percent discount off the list price of nearly everything in store during Educator Appreciation Week, which runs through March 27. As schools coast-to-coast contend with sweeping budget cuts — resulting in even less money available to teachers for classroom supplies — educators, including current and retired teachers, professors, librarians, homeschoolers and others, can use this generous discount to stock up on books, music, movies and decor items for the classroom as well as professional resources and virtually anything in store that will enrich their personal lives. To take advantage of the 30 percent discount, which is among the most generous offers currently available, educators need only present proof of educator status, which can be either a paystub or current or retired teacher identification card. (Homeschoolers must present their homeschool certification.) Educators who are members of the Borders Rewards® loyalty program will enjoy even greater savings — for every $150 in annual qualifying purchases members make, they earn $5 in "Borders Bucks," which can be used toward a future purchase.

New National Teacher Registry

In another move to help teachers deal with the pain of shrinking budgets, last week Borders announced it will be the exclusive book retailer for the nation's first and only national registry specifically for teachers, accessible at www.nationalteacherregistry.com. Developed by MarCole Interactive Systems, the National Teacher Registry is a free service that enables teachers to set up a registry of items they need for their classrooms. Parents, friends and family can order items — including books, music and movies from Borders at great prices — and those items will be shipped directly to classrooms. Borders will begin transacting on the site in the coming months.

Everyday Classroom Discount of 25 Percent

While enjoying EAW, pre-K through grade 12 educators, homeschoolers and school librarians who do not currently have a free Borders Classroom Discount Card are encouraged to sign up for the card, which gives them access to an everyday discount of 25 percent off the list price of all books, CDs, toys and games, as well as 10 percent off DVDs for classroom use. To receive a discount card, educators must present proof of their educator status.

"My Favorite Teacher Is..."

In honor of Educator Appreciation Week — and to pay tribute to teachers everywhere — Borders recently asked some customers to talk on camera about their favorite or most influential teacher. Not surprisingly these customers waxed poetic about teachers who not only encouraged and inspired them, but also enriched their education through small yet extraordinary acts.

Photographer Stewart Cohen's new monograph is comprised of 50 portraits of compelling people ranging from the fascinatingly famous Prince Albert of Monaco to the simply fascinating Lucky Larry Bailey.

"Stewart Cohen and his camera work magic...he does more than capture people and their personalities.  He explores their identity.  Each page will delight you, and also make you think. It's a treasure," commented Walter Isaacson.

When educational leaders from across South Carolina visited Clinton Elementary School on March 1, 2010, they witnessed an entire school community transformed by a new reading initiative. At the beginning of the school year, Principal Rachel Ray launched American Reading Company's 100 Book Challenge as the structured independent reading system for use at school and at home, requiring daily parental involvement to monitor reading practice. Teachers also underwent extensive training to master research-based best practices in reading instruction.

The result? "The culture in our school around reading has been transformed," said Ray. "Students are enthusiastic about reading, parents are involved in daily reading routines, and teachers are demonstrating expert skills in reading instruction to coach students to the next level." This year students are expected to log 800 "steps" or 200 hours of supervised independent reading practice.  The school has been infused with 7,500 new books that are leveled according to independent reading levels.

Ray was able to share her school's success with 100 Book Challenge at a special event she hosted for neighboring district leaders to observe the program in action. Special guests also included James M. "Jimmy" Neal, South Carolina State Representative and Vice Chairman of the Education and Public Works Committee, and Steven Abbott, Title I State Coordinator for the South Carolina Department of Education.

"It's a testament to the district and school leadership that others are interested in the successful implementation here in Lancaster," said Quality Quinn, EVP of American Reading Company, who also attended the event. "Principal Ray is a true champion for effective training to ensure that teacher quality is the constant in her school, and not the variable."

American Reading Company programs are not new to the state of South Carolina. Currently 18 of the state's 85 public school districts use the company's programs.

About American Reading Company

American Reading Company transforms school cultures to create sustainable reading achievement through training, management, and monitoring. The company was founded in 1998 and is now based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Today, more than a million students in 2,100 schools across 420 districts in 41 states participate in the company's programs, which include Action 100, 100 Book Challenge, Research Labs, and Summer School Express. Most -- if not all -- workers have experienced anxiety and unhappiness due to a toxic boss. Companies then face the perplexing dilemma of keeping or firing a derailing executive who is a star performer, but negatively affects work. The Prodigal Executive: How to Coach Executives Too Painful to Keep, Too Valuable to Fire (published by AuthorHouse) by Bruce A. Heller, Ph.D., teaches the essentials of what managers and business leaders need to know about coaching executives too valuable to fire, but too risky to keep on the payroll.

Some derailed executives create toxic workplaces that cause customers and peers to complain in ever-increasing numbers. So why not just fire them? Often these prima donnas are extremely valuable managers and executives. Some bring in millions of dollars to the company, and that revenue would leave with them. Others have an irreplaceable, specialized skill or body of knowledge that make them invaluable to the company. This difficult decision causes anxiety and consternation for company decision makers and can at times be overwhelming.

The Prodigal Executive identifies the characteristics of a derailing executive and provides practical suggestions to get that individual back on track. Throughout the book, Heller uses personal stories and anecdotes that readers can easily relate to. In the book readers will learn:

  • How eight out of 10 derailing executives can be saved
  • Six myths that hold many companies back from coaching
  • When to keep 'em and when to fire 'em
  • How to give feedback to toxic bosses and derailed executives

The Help Group is the largest, most innovative and comprehensive nonprofit of its kind serving children with special needs related to autism, learning disabilities, abuse and emotional challenges. The Help Group's specialized education and therapy programs serve more than 6,000 children and families each year. Through outreach, parent and professional education efforts, The Help Group extends its reach to countless others nationally and internationally. www.thehelpgroup.org

Who would have thought the secret to sales success lies in the Passover Seder? Whether it's someone trying to get a job, an employee seeking a promotion, or a mother trying to win over a teacher, everyone has to sell something at some point, but the fact is most people dislike sales, even when selling themselves.

According to authors Kevin Daum and Daniel Turner, the Passover passage about the four sons— the wise son, wicked son, simple son and son unable to ask—contains a valuable lesson for successful sales.  In Daum and Turner's book, ROAR! Get heard in the Sales and Marketing Jungle, (Wiley; $22.95; April 2010), four types of buyers— the wise buyer, the cynical buyer, the simple buyer and the disinterested buyer— are identified based on the story about the four sons.  Understanding each buyer's specific personality traits and preferred communication styles increases sales success.

For example, the cynical buyer trusts no one, usually has his arms folded, is sarcastic, stubborn and often insulting with a chip on his shoulder when it comes to being sold something.

"The cynical buyer is usually driven by fear and the first step to winning him over is to acknowledge his fear," advises Daum. "A little self sacrifice to build trust can result in quick progress toward a sale."

ROAR! details information about all the buyers through a charming parable focusing on two old friends who regularly meet over lunch at New York city's kosher restaurants.

Daum not only exposes the ancient Jewish secrets of buyer identification, but provides a clever acronym for ROAR! to win over any buyer.

Recognize the Buyer

Observe from their perspective

Acknowledge who they are

Resolve their need

With this simple approach, it's no wonder the Hebrews convinced the Pharoah to let them go!

In its advance, ROAR! is being used not only for business but for eagle scouts preparing for leadership, college students preparing to sell themselves in the workforce, and even a dating expert in Colorado who's testing ROAR! methods for picking up women in bars.

More on ROAR!, author Kevin Daum and his quest to get on the New York Times Best Seller list is at: www.AwesomeRoar.com.

As I Remember: A 1940s Childhood (Avenue Design, Inc., http://www.avenue-design.com) has been written through the entertaining perspective of a romantic boy. The time is during and just after the Second World War. The setting is Reno, Nevada and the high desert of the American far west. The mood is confident, warm, and naive.

Award-winning author Gordon Chism has written an entertaining firsthand account of a 1940s childhood in western America. The cliche of America being all "mom and apple pie" was never truer than in the 1940s. The positive energy from a belief in our leaders, the flag, and the righteousness of American policies and values is captured by the author.

The dominant backdrop for this memoir is Chism's Auto Camp and its neighborhood. A map of this area helps the reader navigate through the narrative. Another map of the surrounding lakes, towns, countryside, and highways gives a broader sense of locale. A selection of family photos rounds out the time and place.

Possibly a good way to interpret this book and understand the tone is through the phrase: "I am remembering, in ever-increasing detail, events that I am not quite sure ever happened."

As I Remember: A 1940s Childhood is a paperback book of 134 pages printed in a 6" x 9" format and retails for $12.95. It is available online at Amazon.com, on order from your local bookstore, or from the publisher listed below.

About the Author

Gordon Chism earned a living as a builder, tennis instructor, sculptor, and now as a writer. His third publication, The Thinking Person's UFO Book, was awarded a 2009 IPPY bronze medal and was a finalist in the 2009 Next Generation Book Awards. He lives in a small northern California coastal town.

Ancestry.com, the world's largest online family history resource, announced a new publishing agreement today with Turner Publishing. In the agreement, Turner will take over most existing inventory and related publishing contracts for Ancestry Publishing, a division of Ancestry.com.

"The roots of Ancestry.com go back to a small genealogy company started in 1983 under the name of Ancestry Publishing," said Jennifer Utley, Editorial Director, Ancestry.com. "As we looked to finding a vendor to take over the publishing business, we wanted to find a partner who could continue the legacy of Ancestry Publishing. As a leader in the genealogy publishing space with broad distribution channels, Turner will do just that."

Beginning this month, Turner will be the vendor of record for more than 100 titles, including bestsellers The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, Ancestry's Red Book, and 1-2-3 Family Tree as well as numerous other titles.

"This was a classic win-win," commented Todd Bottorff, President and Publisher of Turner. "We are genuinely thrilled to be working with Ancestry.com and excited for the opportunity to market some of the most iconic titles printed for the genealogy category in the past 25 years."

Producing more than 800 genealogy titles since 1984, Turner will support the newly acquired titles with additional marketing and distribution efforts nationwide. The transaction also grants Turner limited use of the Ancestry.com name for publishing purposes. Twenty-two year old Fulbright scholar, Lillian Tuttle, decided that she wanted to make a difference by establishing a library in an African orphanage school. As a volunteer with Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church, Lillian traveled to Vihiga Children's Home, an orphanage in a small village in Kenya, to tutor eighth grade students in preparation for their high school entrance exams. She carried with her only two books to start the library, Malia & Teacup Awesome African Adventure and Malia & Teacup Out on a Limb, the self-esteem building adventure series created by Dr. Molly Barrow.

The children had never experienced a library, did not know how to care for books nor understand the concept of loaning the books. However, the children were thrilled with the tales of African adventure and emotional challenges the character Malia faces as a young girl who travels to Kenya to find her missing father, who insists she care for a tiny dog, Teacup.

The Edith Junior Academy School tutor worried that one particular boy might not pass his exams. Yet, after he read about the character Malia, he could relate to her struggles personally. He made the decision to commit to his studies with Tuttle's help and passed his exams. Books that demonstrate survival in dire circumstances can inspire a child to believe in him or herself and to fight for a better life. The new Lillian Tuttle Library has changed the lives of over one hundred orphaned children.

"A spoonful of adventure makes the psychology go down," according to Barrow, author with a doctorate in clinical psychology. Just as Mary Poppins helped children take their medicine with a little sugar, Barrow uses exciting adventure books to embed subtle positive messages about building self-esteem. "Self-esteem is the single most important factor for the safety of a child. How a child values themselves is the first line of defense in dangerous situations against school bullies, predators, and abuse. I want children everywhere to gain higher self-esteem and to stay safe," says Barrow.

A journey of self-discovery, Malia & Teacup Awesome African Adventure (ISBN: 978-0-9825109-0-2 7/2009) for ages 9 and up, is a fast-paced, exciting book with 325-pages and 31 illustrations by Erik Pflueger. Malia & Teacup Out on a Limb (ISBN: 978-0-9825109-1-9) is a younger version for 6-8 year olds. Florida Sunshine State Young Readers Award Committee has nominated both books for the 2010 children's book award and the prestigious Children and Libraries Journal Summer issue article discusses self-esteem and the books. The book's back pages and web site provide parents and teachers help with discussion topics about safety and self-esteem. Malia & Teacup books are available at bookstores, www.maliaandteacup.com, www.drmollybarrow.com, Kindle, Follett Library Resources and Ingram. Discounts are available for groups or schools for underprivileged children from Barringer Publishing. A portion of the proceeds will help fund the Lillian Tuttle library.

Ellen Rakieten and Anne Coyle, authors of the new release UNDATEABLE: 311 Things Men Do That Guarantee They Won't Be Dating Or Having Sex (A Villard Trade Paperback Original to be published March 16, 2010), are looking for THE MOST UNDATEABLE MEN IN AMERICA!

For any guy that ever wondered Was it something I did?  Was it something I said? Was it something I wore? the answer is a resounding YES!  The newest online destination for men without a clue and the women who dated (and married!) them, UNDATEABLE.com is collecting examples of friends, brothers, boyfriends, fiancees and husbands from the women who love them in spite of themselves.  Visitors will be able to comment, rate, tag and share the stories, photos, audio and video posts.

"Undateable.com is not a site that makes fun of men — we love men!" adds Anne Coyle, co-author of Undateable: 311 Things Men Do That Guarantee They Won't Be Dating Or Having Sex.  "From my own encounters with Undateable men, I can't stress enough the significance of first impressions and how quickly a man can go from a 'maybe' to a 'no way,' all because of something as trivial as a soul patch."

Many seemingly fluent Spanish speakers in the U.S. use English-influenced syntax and vocabulary in their daily speech. For example, in the phrase "el presidente fue electo" the word "electo" is a direct translation from the English usage "the president was elected." The correct form is actually "el presidente fue elegido."

"Hablando bien se entiende la gente" (Speaking Well Makes the World Go 'Round) presents 300 examples of common errors made by Spanish speakers in the U.S. The slim, 168 page manual is designed to help U.S. Spanish speakers become aware of the Spanglish which has crept into the language. In many cases, the language infractions cited in the manual are expressions that have existed for several generations now in the states.

"Hablando bien se entiende la gente" is divided into six sections, beginning with false cognates, words that seem similar in English and Spanish, but which are actually quite different. For example, the phrase "to fill out a job application" is not "llenar una aplicacion de trabajo," again a direct translation from English, but "llenar una solicitud de trabajo."

Another part of the manual clarifies expressions. For example "jugar un papel," which is derived from the English phrase "to play a role" should be "desempenar" or "representar."

The manual was compiled by the North American Academy of the Spanish Language—one of the 22 offices of the Spanish Royal Academy for language arts. Each grammatical infraction is accompanied by a brief explanation with the correct usage. Many of the items are illustrated with humorous drawings, and the tone of the manual is lively and entertaining.

"Hablando bien se entiende la gente" is published by Santillana and is available in retail outlets and bookstores across the U.S.

In the wake of enormous economic challenges, many of our nation's educational institutions are turning toward digital solutions to provide flexible learning options. Some states have gone a step further by setting a deadline for a complete digital transition – a new California state law requires that all textbooks used in public and private postsecondary institutions be made available digitally by the year 2020. While the deadline is nearly 10 years away, McGraw-Hill already is meeting California's standard by offering digital versions of 95 percent of its current higher education titles.  All of McGraw-Hill Education's content for elementary school and secondary school is available in digital form.

"McGraw-Hill enthusiastically embraces the digital revolution, and believes that the creation and delivery of digital content is integral to the future of education," said Peter C. Davis, president, McGraw-Hill Education. "We are committed to providing the content and digital technology that facilitate teaching and drive student achievement in California and nationwide."

McGraw-Hill's growing line of digital, interactive programs for the higher education market includes McGraw-Hill Connect – a revolutionary assignment and assessment platform that individualizes lesson plans for students while incorporating material found outside conventional textbooks.  By pioneering these new capabilities today, McGraw-Hill is helping to expand the possibilities for digital content tomorrow.

McGraw-Hill has made digital versions of its textbooks available through CourseSmart to expand the reach of its digital content. CourseSmart is an e-book retailer that allows students to purchase top higher educational content and view it on a laptop computer, iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.  E-books available through CourseSmart provide students with search capabilities, highlighting, note-taking features, and online access.  Additionally, McGraw-Hill is continuing to form partnerships with many popular e-book reader platforms and device makers including Amazon Kindle, enTourage Systems, Follett/CafeScribe, MBS/xPlana, VitalSource Technologies, and ScrollMotion.

McGraw-Hill's Center for Digital Innovation develops digital platforms for the PreK-12 market, which are customized by state standards, district requirements, and teacher and student needs for true individualization. The programs support all students - from those in need of intervention to those in need of additional challenges. New offerings include Planet Turtle, a K-3 (Math) social network where children can interact with their peers in a protected Web environment and complete learning "challenges" that progress as their skills improve, and CINCH Mathematics, a complete, digital, teacher-led K-6 math curriculum that uses the power of interactive whiteboard teaching and versatile online capabilities to engage all students in learning, and CINCH Project, a collection of Web 2.0 tools for collaborative learning projects.

On Feb. 22, Harvey Mackay released his latest blockbuster book, Use Your Head To Get Your Foot in the Door:  Job Search Secrets No One Else Will Tell You, and it's already cracked the national bestseller lists.

On Sunday, March 21, Use Your Head To Get Your Foot in the Door will appear at #4 in the New York Times Advice and How-To list, which includes business, diet, exercise and cook books.  It is currently #7 on the USA Today Money bestseller list, where it has remained for the last two weeks after debuting at #11 following its first week of release.  The Wall Street Journal ranks Use Your Head at #8 after it opened at # 11.  The book ranked #1 at amazon.com in four categories – Job Hunting, Education, Counseling and Vocational Guidance.  It climbed to #2 on amazon.com's business bestseller list.

Use Your Head is already in its fifth printing after three weeks.

"Fortunately – and unfortunately – the timing was perfect for a book like this," Mackay said.  "Job security is anything but secure.  The days of working at one company from youth to a gold watch at retirement are a distant memory.  Catapulting unemployment numbers included the most experienced employees of once-stable companies."

These are serious times, and job hunters need the best advice they can get.  With 17 percent of the workforce on the street, counting those who have stopped looking for work, people are learning that today's job market is more competitive than ever.  Further, job and career changes are virtually guaranteed over their lifetimes.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person will have 10 to 14 jobs by age 38.  Other studies say most people will have 3 to 5 careers in their lifetimes.  "The logical conclusion then is that we need to prepare for a perpetual job search, because almost no one is immune to these changing economic times," Mackay said.

Mackay is so sold on the advice in Use Your Head, it comes with a money-back guarantee:  He will cheerfully refund the purchase price for readers who follow his techniques and don't land a job in six months.

Harvey Mackay is the author of New York Times #1 bestsellers, Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive and Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt.  Both of these books were recently listed by The New York Times among the top 15 best-selling motivational/business books of all time.  In April 1997, Harvey wrote another New York Times bestseller, this time on networking, titled Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty.  In January 1999, he published his fourth New York Times bestseller, titled Pushing The Envelope.  In October, 2004, he unveiled We Got Fired! … And It's The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Us, which became his fifth New York Times bestseller and third to reach #1.  His books have sold 10 million copies, been translated into 37 languages and distributed in 80 countries.

Harvey is a nationally syndicated columnist and has been named one of the top five speakers in the world by Toastmasters International.  He is chairman of the $100 million MackayMitchell Envelope Company, a company he started in 1960.

According to the Beverage Information Group's recently released Handbook Advance 2010, the bleak economy influenced the success of each segment of the beverage alcohol business in 2009.  Distilled spirits and wine experienced positive results, albeit at a much slower rate than in the past, while beer saw unprecedented declines.

Last year, the economy reversed the previous "trading up" trend in the spirits category and consumers changed their drinking occasions with a shift to off-premise consumption.  Distilled spirits grew 1.7% in 2009 to 188.7 million cases, marking the 12th consecutive year of positive results for the category. However, the spirits market's expansion slowed from the 3.2% gain posted in 2007 and 2.1% in 2008.

The U.S. wine market grew for the second consecutive year, with more domestic consumption and a boost from the large millennial generations' affinity for wine.  Wine experienced a slight slowdown in its 2009 growth rate. Wine consumption increased 0.8%, only 0.1% less than its 2008 gain, and finished the year at 297.1 million 9-liter cases.

"Wine sales' continued growth can be attributed to consumers entertaining at home more, and to the array of products at lower price points," says Eric Schmidt, manager of information services for the Beverage Information Group, Norwalk, Conn.

Conversely, the beer industry experienced a sharper decline in consumption than the other two segments.  Total beer consumption declined 1.4% in 2009 to 2.9 billion cases.  Imported beer has struggled, yet the craft beer segment continues to enjoy positive growth despite its higher prices.  There was a sharp drop in volume among mainstream imported beers, as well as a trading down shift that led to a downturn among large volume domestic brands.

The Handbook Advance 2010 is $895; handbook with CD is $1,065. Shipping and handling is $10 for U.S. and Canadian orders, $20 for international orders. The publications can be purchased at www.beveragehandbooks.com or by calling Cynthia Porter at (630) 762-8709.

Last week, former Principia College journalism professor and former Christian Science Monitor writer Craig Savoye agreed to withdraw all current copies of his recently self-published book Nebraska Stories:  Tales of Cowboys, Ranchers and Assorted Characters in a settlement regarding plagiarism and copyright infringement of several of the included stories.  Stuart Jenkins, a former colleague of Savoye at Principia, made the accusations after reviewing Savoye's book and determining that significant portions of his book were copied, or heavily borrowed, without permission from manuscripts that Jenkins shared with Savoye for editing years ago.

The stories, titled The Horse Trader, Kleptomaniac, and Francis in Nebraska Stories, started from stories told around the Jenkins family dinner table for the entertainment of city guests.   These were real stories which Jenkins had heard his father tell for years and in some cases witnessed himself while growing up on the 136-year-old family ranch.  A storyteller himself, Stuart Jenkins had been encouraged many times to put these stories into writing.  In the process of putting these stories on paper, Jenkins found that he had to create and add significant detail to lengthen each story to further draw in the reader.  These enhancements are precisely the red flag that drew Jenkins' attention to his own work appearing in Savoye's Nebraska Stories.  Full paragraphs were lifted from Jenkins' 1999 hand-written manuscript.

"While the stories themselves are not my property, the details and embellishments that I added years ago to turn brief entertaining oral stories into enhanced written pieces are certainly mine," said Stuart Jenkins, Vice President of Business Development for Deckers Outdoor Corp, the manufacturer of well known footwear products including Ugg and Teva.  "The fact that Craig took my manuscripts, which I had shared with him for editing, and then re-wrote them slightly while claiming the completed authorship was his own is both ironic and offensive.  Ironic in particular since a professor of journalism and a former newspaper reporter should be perfectly clear on the consequences of  plagiarism."

In the settlement, Savoye agreed to immediately and permanently cease publication and distribution of the book in its current form, and to remove the stories The Horse Trader and Kleptomaniac, as well as parts of Francis, from any future printings.

After learning of the settlement agreement between Savoye and Jenkins, Principia College launched its own investigation and this week announced that Mr. Savoye would no longer work at the college.

Jenkins' father died in 2006, and so is unable to testify to the detail, or lack thereof, in the stories he verbally shared with friends and visitors, including Savoye.

Jenkins' brother, Jim, as well-versed a storyteller as his dad and brother, is just as disappointed as Stuart.  "You have to admit it takes guts to steal a story and then title it 'Kleptomaniac'," said Jim. "Dad never told those stores in this level of detail.  In fact, I can virtually guarantee that Mr. Savoye never heard my dad using phrases like 'shimmering white lead ropes.' 'Shimmering' just wasn't in my Dad's vocabulary."

Jenkins wrote the stories in 1999 and shared them for editing with Mr. Savoye in 2000-2001.  Mr. Savoye's edited versions of the stories were returned to Mr. Jenkins in 2001.  Other than a passing conversation, Jenkins and Savoye never talked again about the stories until Mr. Savoye published the book utilizing the stories in the late fall of 2009.

"I was not out to win any money," continued Jenkins.  "But this is my childhood, my family, my traditions and our family's values.  The stories were shared freely by my father, but the details, and the hard work, to put many of them in writing were intentionally stolen from me and I want to get them back."

Book publisher Galaxy Press has earned a starred review in Publisher's Weekly for their recent science fiction and fantasy short fiction stories anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XXV, edited by K.D. Wentworth.

"Always a glimpse of tomorrow's stars, this year's anthology is definitely a must-have for the genre reader," said the Publisher's Weekly review.

The anthology is a collection of fictional short stories spanning the genres of fantasy and science fiction, written by winners of the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest, now in its 25th year. Authors Donald Mead, Matthew S. Rotundo, Jordan Lapp, Emery Huang, Fiona Lehn, and Mike Wood all contributed captivating short stories ranging from postwar ghosts in Hiroshima to the life of the mystical phoenix bird. Each story is accompanied by an illustrated work from winners of the companion Illustrators of the Future contest, while several essays round out the volume of work.

"This is our first starred review in Publisher's Weekly," said Joni Labaqui, Director of the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contests at Author Services, Inc. "The winners this year had exceptional stories, so it is not surprising to me that it would receive such a review. The judges reported this year that the story quality in general was very high and selection of the winners was tough. There are lots of talented people out there who just need a break. L. Ron Hubbard set up this contest to provide such a vehicle for the neophyte speculative fiction writers of the world."

L. Ron Hubbard established the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future contest in 1983 as a way to discover new writing talent and publishing the works of amateur, aspiring writers. Over the past 25 years, the contest has helped place over 250 novels and 2,500 short stories in bookstores and libraries worldwide. Furthermore, the Writers of the Future Award has earned its place as one of fiction's most prestigious literary awards alongside the Huge and Nebula awards.

Celebrating "The Autism Connection: Horses & Humans," the Training, Education & Research Institute (TERI) is pleased to announce that Rupert Isaacson, author, producer and star of The Horse Boy, will be guest speaker at their 20th Annual Cocktail Reception & Golf Tournament Fundraiser.  The two-day event kicks-off with the Cocktail Reception, where Isaacson will share the story of his family's epic journey of personal and spiritual discovery, and how a horse helped heal his autistic son.

"For 20 years, we have witnessed the miracles that can take place when an individual with autism is introduced to horses through our therapeutic equestrian program," says Cheryl Kilmer, founder and CEO of TERI.  "It is an honor and pleasure to welcome Mr. Isaacson, and to hear first-hand the story of the lengths his family went through to find a cure for his son."

Isaacson, a writer and former horse trainer is the author of The Horse Boy, as well as star and producer of The Horse Boy movie.  The Horse Boy follows Isaacson, his wife Kristin Neff (a psychology professor) and their autistic son, as they travel on horseback through Outer Mongolia in an attempt to find healing for their son. Their journey began after their two-year-old son, Rowan, was diagnosed with autism.  After seeking the best medical treatment available, but discovering traditional therapies had little effect, Isaacson discovered Rowan has a profound affinity for animals— particularly horses—and the family set off on a quest that would change their lives forever.

Fitting with the Horses & Humans theme, both the Cocktail Reception and Golf Tournament will be held in Rancho Santa Fe, home to a large community of horse enthusiasts, at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, located at 5827 Via De La Cumbre, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92091.  The Cocktail Reception will take place on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at 5 p.m.  The Golf Tournament will follow on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. with a One Better Ball format.

All funds raised at the 20th Annual Cocktail Reception & Golf Tournament will go toward the completion of the Harriet E. Pfleger Therapeutic Equestrian Center.  The Equestrian Center, which will include six stalls, a pony parlor washroom, veterinary center, riding arena and walking trails, and a picnic patio, is the first of six phases that will complete the Center for Research & Life Planning.  The $50 million campus will directly address the crisis of a growing and aging population with autism and other developmental disabilities, by providing a comprehensive array of services and support programs covering an entire lifespan in this one dynamic location.

This year's event was made possible through the hard work of a dedicated committee of volunteers, including: Dawn Hummel and Judy Roberts (co-chairs), Connie Pittard, Ann Boon, Susan Loban, Donna Pineda, Jennifer Dunn, Carol Linovitz, Carolyn Singer, Mickey Burgess, Kris Charton, Joanie O'Leary, Kathy Yash, Paige Vanosky, Shari Sapp, Julie Klaus, and Julie Dillon.

To register for TERI's 20th Annual Cocktail Reception and/or Golf Tournament, contact Laura White at 760-721-1706.  For more information on The Horse Boy, visit www.horseboymovie.com.  And for more information on TERI, the therapeutic equestrian program or the Center for Research & Life Planning, visit www.teriinc.org.

According to the CDC, in 2010, one in every 110 children will be diagnosed with autism.  Since 1980, TERI has pioneered programs to improve the quality of life and independence of individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, and their families.  For more than 20 years, TERI's therapeutic equestrian program has helped children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities enhance their self-esteem, confidence and courage, along with developing their motor skills, balance and coordination.

Teens love to hang out.  But where and when they hang out is often the subject of controversy.  Watch This Space: Designing, Defending and Sharing Public Spaces (Kids Can Press) is a groundbreaking book that uses a fun, visually exciting approach to help kids ages 10-14 understand what public space is and why it's important in their lives.  It explores questions that arise when people share public space — such as how to balance privacy and security — and looks at limits on public behaviors like skateboarding, graffiti, and political protests.  Written by an award-winning author, Watch This Space shows young readers why public space is an interesting and exciting part of the real world.

As our population grows, there are increasing demands on public space, and kids have the most to lose.  Watch This Space helps them understand why creating, preserving, and protecting parks, playgrounds, and other public spaces benefits everyone.  Packed with information from around the world, this innovative, fully-illustrated book challenges kids to become active citizens.

Watch This Space puts society's core issues — such as social justice, community building, and the environment — into a global context.  Meanwhile, stories about everything from homeless teens to sexual harassment emphasize the local aspect.  The book examines differences between public and private space, using examples ranging from the Roman Forum to the Internet.

"Watch This Space is a great resource for both teens and adults," says Janette Sadik-Khan, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, "because it looks at and asks hard questions about what it truly means for something to be public space."

Watch This Space takes a creative approach to topics including urban green space, conflicts over public art, and selling public space to advertisers.  Colorful digital illustrations, inspired by architectural concept drawings, are crossed with a playful graphic-novel style.  Teachers will appreciate the notes, glossary, and index, and the tie-in to Social Studies and Human Geography curricula.

Author Hadley Dyer writes both fiction and nonfiction.  She is a former children's book editor, bookseller, publicist, reviewer, and library coordinator, and past president of IBBY Canada.  Illustrator and comics creator Marc Ngui visited public spaces around the globe while illustrating Watch This Space.

Jones Lang LaSalle's client focus has been recognized as a key to the company's adaptability to changing market dynamics in the Harvard Business Press book "Reorganize for Resilience: Putting Customers at the Center of Your Organization."  In this book, Harvard Business School Professor Ranjay Gulati explains how pioneering companies have overcome their built-in institutional obstacles by reorganizing their structure and capabilities to be proactive, flexible and truly customer-centric.

Jones Lang LaSalle is featured prominently for embracing an outside-in perspective that focuses on creatively delivering value to customers instead of pushing its own offerings.

"In good times and bad, successful companies immerse themselves in the business of their clients with a focus on problem solving for the client, rather than selling a suite of services," said Lauralee Martin, Chief Financial and Operating Officer for Jones Lang LaSalle, who was interviewed for the book.

According to Gulati, this focus on rallying around customer problems results in the resilience that protects businesses from economic storms. In the book, Gulati also highlights Jones Lang LaSalle's ability to break down barriers and to create a nimble business architecture that enables greater flexibility through increased client service coordination.

"We are consistently focused on aligning our firm to enable our teams to create the most innovative solutions to our clients' challenges," said Peter Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of Jones Lang LaSalle Americas, who is quoted and referenced in the book.

Mr. Gulati created this book through interviews with more than 500 executives over a decade of boom-and-bust economic cycles. Gulati uncovered five key levers that pry open silos, expand mindsets, build partnerships and help an organization recognize and shift internal barriers to move toward ongoing resilience:

  1. Coordination: Connect, eradicate, or restructure silos to enable swift responses. Coordination aligns tasks and information around a customer axis.
  2. Cooperation: Aligns all employees around the shared goal of customer focused-goals.
  3. Clout: Redistributes power to "bridge builders" and customer champions. Clout enables individuals and divisions to take on meaningful silo-busting roles and ultimately enhance outside-in responsiveness needed in a shifting market.
  4. Capabilities: Develop employees' skills at tackling changing customer needs. Capabilities means encouraging the boundary-spanning skills that managers and employees need to develop to cope with changing customer needs. As an example, Gulati cites how Jones Lang LaSalle mandated that account managers spend time within each of the firm's product and service units to gain greater knowledge of them.
  5. Connection: Blend your offerings with partners' to provide unique customer solutions. Connections help companies achieve sustainable, customer-centricity by leveraging the extraordinary value of effective partners.

For Simon of Cyrene, being in the wrong place at the wrong time may have caused his own salvation. In biblical Gospels, Simon of Cyrene is forced by Roman soldiers to carry the heavy burden of Jesus' cross as he is taken to his crucifixion. His task is perhaps among the most important and symbolic acts of the Bible - yet Simon remains a little-known biblical figure. "Simon's Crossing: A Novel" (published by iUniverse), written by Charles William Asher and Dennis Patrick Slattery, attempts to paint a picture of Simon of Cyrene's intriguing life and the redemptive twist of fate caused by accepting Christ's simple, wooden cross.

Enter the historic world of Simon of Cyrene, where grief, revenge and tender devotion await. Families are torn apart and citizens face marauding soldiers as well as random acts of violence and desperation. Simon, visiting Jerusalem for Passover, is suddenly pulled from the crowd in the streets and demanded to carry the cross of Jesus Christ up to Mt. Golgotha. Compelled to carry the cross and full of hatred and revenge over the death of his wife at the hands of Roman soldiers, Simon reluctantly yields to the task. He struggles with personal loss and a fiery desire for revenge, suffering alongside Christ on their fated mountain journey. Along the way, Simon encounters Pontius Pilate, Veronica, Mary and the sons of Simon (Rufus and Alexander) as they seek to grasp the mystery of a compassionate Nazarene, serenely representing the kingdom of God.

In "Simon's Crossing" this ordinary man from Cyrene steps boldly out of the pages of the Bible, sensing that his own life depends on the Nazarene staggering just ahead of him. Pressed into service by a Roman soldier, persuaded by sacrificial love and thrust into a terrifying drama of brutality, vengeance and tender devotion, Simon heroically bears Christ's transforming cross. Asher and Slattery write:

Pricilla said nothing and walked hurriedly ahead of me. I looked at the slight swaying of her hips and simply tried to assure myself that of course they would see her subtle beauty. I thought these soldiers were on a small-time mission. They could, along the way, carry out their random pleasurable escapades and ride on toward some elusive glory for Rome. They wouldn't attack, not with my neighbors so near. And it wouldn't be just four against three. No, four against four. You couldn't count Pricilla out. Our neighbors would help. Alexander and Rufus happened to be home with us. Wrong time. Wrong place. ... They would see us safely to Jerusalem, our most holy city. Or so they thought.

Simon's vulnerability mirrors our own, compelling us to carry our own crosses and transcend in presence of grace.

The graphic adventures depicted in the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spider Man and Batman continue to top the comic book charts and inspire box office blockbusters.

Yet also climbing the "comic book" charts is the graphic novel Atlas Black, an unsung hero of sorts, whose adventures are capturing the minds of college students at the Texas Tech University Rawls College of Business. The graphic novel is now required reading in both undergraduate and graduate classes taught by its author: Rawls Associate Professor of Management Jeremy Short.

"Think of all the textbooks college students have to wade through during their college careers. I've found that the traditional textbooks have a disconnect with the students," Short said. "So, the students have a hard time retaining the information - but Atlas Black uses a fixed set of characters that apply the material to their story."

And that's how Atlas Black was born. Short co-authored Atlas Black: Managing to Succeed with Talya Bauer, the Cameron Professor of Management at Portland State University, and Dave Ketchen, the Lowder Eminent Scholar in Entrepreneurship at Auburn University. Len Simon, who has also worked on such projects as Anastasia, Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, Fat Albert and Curious George, is the illustrator for the book.

"Managing to Succeed not only focuses on starting a business," Short said. "Atlas faces challenges paying his rent, working odd jobs to get through school that offer a little 'real world' experience. He even has challenges with his ex-girlfriend. The second novel in the series will focus on how Atlas Black maintains his business and the third will focus on franchising his business."

The second graphic novel of the trilogy is expected to come out in May of this year.

"One of the most fulfilling things about the Atlas Black series is that students finish a book and then ask what's going to happen next," Short said. "I doubt that has happened before in the history of textbooks."

The graphic novel is picking up steam quickly at universities across the country, as well as internationally, as they request Atlas Black to become a part of their curriculum, according to Short.

Short added that it's not just about developing an educational tool to help his students adapt real-life lessons to the classroom; it's also about a desire to make textbooks affordable again.

"Students can literally go broke buying books for classes each semester," Short said. "It's crazy. Flat World Knowledge (his publishing company) allowed us the creative license to make this book affordable to students."

It sells for $14.99, and is available at Amazon.com.

When Katherine Bigelow's The Hurt Locker won for "Best Picture," many believed that James Cameron's Avatar had been robbed. Speculation focused on Oscar politics and the directors' ill-fated marriage. But noted psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Fine says the reason is simpler: Avatar didn't win because the Academy missed the movie's deeper meaning and chose a "real life" film instead.

Those who've argued that Avatar mimics Dances With Wolves or Pocahontas prove Dr. Fine's point. "The message in Avatar is not a simplistic return to nature or to a previous evolutionary stage," he argues, adding, "It may be the next leap in the evolution of consciousness, and the only one that may hold the promise of survival."

Pointing to the greed and cynicism that not only mark much of American culture but have hardened American hearts, he says that unless we wake up to Avatar's message, humanity will be lost. "This film should be seen by every man, woman and child," he says, suggesting that parents should take their teens and tweens to see it and discuss hidden meanings. "I see you," for example, comes from the Sanskrit Namaste, which translates to: "The God in me sees the God in you" or "I see myself in your eyes."

Like Star Wars, Avatar also appeals to our collective unconscious, or world soul. The Na'vi experience of unity of consciousness with other beings -- all of which (themselves included) are really just manifestations of One Awa, or Yahweh -- echoes our ancestors' belief in an interconnected, ever-changing intelligent web of life, symbolized by the World Tree.

Unfortunately, says Dr. Fine, Avatar's "everything is connected" message lies in glaring contrast with the culture of separation most Americans experience. Focusing on a rise of the feminine, and the importance of bonding, this movie offers a blissful alternative to a world where mothers are devalued and babies sent to day care at the ripe old age of six weeks.

In the end, Dr. Fine concludes, this film is about standing at a crossroads: What do we choose for our children -- commercial materialism or reconnection with all life? "Sadly," says Dr. Fine, "the bulldozers in Avatar represent what corporate, modern life have done to us -- steamrolling our soul and consciousness."

A former student of the famed Joseph Chilton Pearce, and a member of the Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health, Dr. Fine says we can help combat this separation by engaging in conscious child-centered parenting. He suggests that new mothers breastfeed, sleep with their babies, connect with nature, and engage in simple low-tech creative play.

His book, THE ART OF CONSCIOUS PARENTING: The Natural Way to Give Birth, Bond with, and Raise Healthy Children (which he wrote with his wife, Dalit Fine, M.S.) has been praised by child development experts worldwide.

A profound and thought-provoking book unveils a relevant concept concerning human knowledge. Author Paul Vjecsner's On Proof for the Existence of God, and Other Reflective Inquiries deals with theoretical perception and systematic scientific methods, with fundamental questions concerning human knowledge. It unfolds how knowledge is acquired and the role of language in it. It explains the nature of reality as learned through the senses -- as it probes into mental understanding in the fields of mathematics and logic. It also investigates the possibilities of combining those methods in gaining knowledge in more transcendent areas like values and religion.

Citing the practice of Descartes, Vjecsner examines prevailing forms of thinking, from linguistic approaches to physical hypotheses. On Proof for the Existence of God, and Other Reflective Inquiries introduces a fresh look at deep-seated idealistic issues. It further probes free will, the mind, and the laws of nature. In this book, the basic laws of logic are explored together with the well-known paradoxes.

"...I am impressed with your way of showing how to understand that God must exist. Much of the difficulty in natural theology arises from the spirit of our times. People now are not inclined to see the validity of your argument..." -- Prof. Vernon J. Bourke, Past President, The American Catholic Philosophical Association and The World Union of Catholic Philosophical Societies

Paul Vjecsner's book can be purchased at any of these online bookstores: http://www.Amazon.com and http://www.bookmasters.com/marktplc/00679.htm.

About the Author

Paul Vjecsner is a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States in 1948. Since childhood, he has made his living primarily in applied art. In 1950-52 he attended evening classes at the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. He was granted three U.S. patents (Nos. 3545667, 3788539 and 3908889) an article about some of this appeared in the monthly Paperboard Packaging (September 1974). A corresponding interest in mathematics made him venture for a while into prime numbers, on which were published two papers of his in the New York State Mathematics Teachers' Journal (May 1976) and The New Jersey Mathematics Teacher (Winter 1977). Inasmuch as his interests expanded in the direction of knowledge in general, he subsequently turned to basic philosophical and other problems, in which he saw himself forced to depart from much of the status quo. He accordingly set about to organize his so far attained particular findings -- and ultimate ones they led to -- into the present volume.

Author also received recently two Internet write-ups by prestigious organizations, one in graphic design and the other in mathematics:

Many are drawn to the spiritual world, but many, as well, do not understand it.

Poet/author/musician Michael Angel shares his spiritual poetry in Avenue Dread (published by Trafford Publishing) in an effort to open others to the spiritual world and the reality that God is real. Angel hopes to draw people closer to Him through his works. With most of his poetry written before he discovered God in 1990, Angel reveals how he explored nature, human emotion, and then the spiritual world. Here is a sample:

DESTINATION

Ancient wisdom

Distant voices

Dark wild bred

Untamed horses

Through the valley

Through the hills

Through eternity

Red blood spills

Glory to God

For He is almighty

He can do incredible things

Through simple people

He is simply almighty God

Let the angels sing

Let the heavens cry

And in one movement

Let our collective soul fly

Towards our Lord

Jesus Christ

In his new haunting, mystery novel, The Portal (published by Trafford Publishing), experienced author Craig Conrad finds the epicenter of darkness in the Midwest and leads readers to a house buzzing with evil that could unleash unseen wickedness on the world -- if not for the heroics of one man, who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Vietnam veteran Paul Rice, a man who suffers from constant nightmares and guilt as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder, promises his new girlfriend, Linda Eastman, an artist with movie-star looks, that he will take a week off from work, travel with her to meet her parents as well as her younger brother and sister, and stay in her family's recently renovated home in Lanark, Wis. Once there, Paul meets her father, who turns out to be a wealthy man in the plumbing fixture business, and her mother, a woman who is only keeping the family together for the benefit of her teenage children still living at home.

Strangely, Paul's dreams turn toward something more menacing, especially when a series of brutal, ritualistic killings start to take place and he begins to uncover the strange killings and disappearances that date back to the time when the Durie clan built the house that the Eastmans recently renovated. Soon, he discovers that the Duries actually created a grimoire, a book of precious sacrifices that would open a portal to the underworld and finally prove that hell indeed exists.

Can Paul follow this twisting trail of evil that leads to the darkest corners in the old Durie mansion and exorcize its unyielding demons with the newfound help of Police Chief Clive Thayer? Can they figure out the pattern of murders in time and together track the killer to the next house before he claims the life of his next victim? Can Paul destroy the house before it opens the hell mouth and unleashes untold evil? Find out in the startling conclusion of Conrad's novel, The Portal, a book that promises as much unflinching horror as it does bone-chilling suspense.

"We are going to pick potatoes." That's what the family housekeeper told four-year-old Irene Levin when she was whisked off from her playgroup in the park to flee German-occupied Norway.

In 1942, Irene Levin was one of 1,200 Norwegian Jews who escaped to Sweden during World War II. Nearly 800 remaining Jews were deported and murdered in Auschwitz. Irene's memories of life in Norway during and after the war are the subject of her book, "We Are Going to Pick Potatoes," Norway and the Holocaust, the Untold Story."

Published by Rowman and Littlefield, the book chronicles a largely unknown chapter in World War II history. It is also the story of one woman's rediscovery of her childhood role and her family's war experiences, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Rabbi Michael Melchior, Chief Rabbi of Norway and former Israeli Cabinet minister calls the book "an important personal and passionate story which gives new perspective to the greatest crime humanity has known - the Holocaust."

The book describes the integration of Jews into Norwegian society from 1854 through the war years. Irene offers a poignant account of what happened to her family during the war, including the loss of seven members of her father's family.  They were among the 771 Jews who were sent to Auschwitz.

After the war, the book focuses on the silence and denial among the returning Jews who only referred to those who perished in Auschwitz as "having disappeared."  She hauntingly recalls the gaps in the Jewish community created by these missing relatives.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has added the Norwegian version of the book to its library, making it available to scholars and the public.

The book will have its official launch at the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford on April 1 along with an exhibit from the Oslo Jewish Museum.  The exhibit, at the Greenberg Center's Sherman Museum, includes information about Norwegian Jews and their contribution to Norwegian art and culture, as well as their participation in the Norwegian resistance movement.

"We Are Going to Pick Potatoes," Norway and the Holocaust, the Untold Story" is available on www.amazon.com,  www.barnesandnoble.com, and  www.hamilton-books.com.

Digital textbooks are poised for rapid adoption if early successes at NYU Bookstores are any indication.

"We expect digital textbook use to grow as fast as the title inventories can," says Phil Christopher, director of NYU Bookstores. "The technology is in place, the books are highly interactive, and students own powerful portable devices. Moreover, traditional textbook costs are rising, and students are quite comfortable with searching, shopping and learning online. Our students are excited to have the option of purchasing CafeScribe® digital textbooks."

When students register for courses, NYU Bookstores emails them links to the required texts to signal the availability of the books on the CafeScribe eBook platform, making it simple for the student to opt for the digital versions. With CafeScribe, no additional eReader is required to access the eBook, and most titles can be downloaded to multiple computers.

NYU has integrated its point-of-sale and store management software with other back-end computer systems to provide this exceptional service to students. Best practices like this have made NYU one of the top independent sellers of CafeScribe digital textbooks. "It's all about providing students with as many choices as we can," said Christopher.

Like CafeScribe eTextbooks, electronic textbook sales as a whole are on the rise. They represent less than five percent of college-store textbook sales but could reach 10 to 15 percent by 2012, according to the National Association of College Stores (NACS).

In addition to lowering textbook costs and making reading more interactive, digital textbooks serve as a lifeline when traditional textbooks aren't available, such as when a faculty member assigns a text at the last minute or a student registers late.

CafeScribe digital textbooks from Follett Higher Education Group (FHEG) are available in more than 8,000 titles in every major discipline. Digital textbooks are just one new way that Follett is saving students money, FHEG also enables students to purchase and rent both new and used textbooks.

Once students download a digital book, CafeScribe technology enables them to read, search, highlight, bookmark and annotate the pages. In addition to the study tools built into the digital textbooks, CafeScribe provides a built-in academically based social networking platform. This allows professors and students to create study groups, share notes and discuss topics with peers in their classroom and around the world.  Once a CafeScribe digital textbook has been purchased and downloaded by a student, they own that copy of the digital textbook, and there is no limit imposed on how long they may access the material.

Students and professors can find digital textbooks at www.CafeScribe.com and www.efollett.com, or at point-of-sale displays at participating college and university bookstores.

CafeScribe digital books can also be downloaded for a seven-day trial period. To learn more about the Try Now, Buy Later program, please visit www.cafescribe.com or www.facebook.com/cafescribe.

CafeScribe has partnered with different inventory control, POS and retail management solutions, including Booklog and RATEX, to help schools streamline the process of bringing CafeScribe digital books to campus bookstores across the U.S.

About the CafeScribe eBook Platform

The CafeScribe eBook platform is a digital textbook and social networking platform for students and educators. The platform is the latest addition to Follett's broad portfolio of course material options for students, available online and at more than 850 college bookstores operated by Follett in the United States and Canada. Stetson University College of Law professor Peter Lake says most colleges and universities have a one-size-fits-all approach to a range of student discipline issues including sexual assault, violence, binge drinking, suicide, drug use and cheating. His latest book, Beyond Discipline -- Managing the Modern Higher Education Environment, suggests an alternative.

Beyond Discipline argues for an education-based, student-centered process, which is not overly legalistic. The book addresses several discipline-related topics including sexual assault and rape on college campuses. Lake argues that it is imperative to identify and remove sexual predators from campuses quickly.

"It is time to completely rethink our approaches to creating safe and responsible campuses," said Lake, who is the director of the Center for Higher Education Law and Policy at Stetson Law. "What we are doing now does not work. There are too many lawyers and legalistic discipline systems; and not enough of what colleges do best -- education. Sometimes we are so obsessed with being 'fair' with wrongdoers that we unintentionally cheat our good students."

"Lake challenges those of us in higher education to 'recognize an appropriate role for law and legalisms,' developing a unique system that ensures the student's education, development, and personal growth remain central," said Gwendolyn Jordan Dungy, executive director of NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Professor Lake often writes for and is quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education and was recently interviewed by National Public Radio on the campus rape issue.
