Many foreclosed-on owners have had to become tenants. Investors are buying cheap houses to rent out or flip, which are becoming rentals in the down market. Also, owners not able to sell their homes after they have moved are now landlords. There are more and more landlords across the entire United States. "We have become a landlord nation," says attorney and author Thomas E. Moorhead.

"The rental housing business (being a landlord) is one of the most regulated businesses in the United States," continues Moorhead. Moorhead has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, and in his book Owner's Manual for Landlords and Property Managers, he shares his vast experience in assisting landlords and property managers with various legal issues.

His book offers a step-by-step practical approach that guides both the beginner and seasoned landlord and property manager through the entire renting process. He includes legal points, actual cases, and useful tips and techniques for understanding the ways laws are applied as well as how to prevent a lawsuit or legal claim.

The professional guidance offered in this complete legal survival handbook will help landlords and property managers both make and keep more of their rental housing income, reaffirming that knowledge is power.

"I have handled literally thousands of cases for landlords and property managers, including evictions, fair housing claims, and civil rights lawsuits. I have lectured to numerous landlord associations and have held many seminars for landlords and property managers. It was suggested that I write a book, so I finally did," says the author.

Thomas E. Moorhead, J.D., has been a practicing attorney since 1974 and is the president and founder of RealChek, LLC, a service for landlords and property managers. He is a member of the State Bar and Real Estate Section of Michigan.

Forget TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, VAMPIRE DIARIES, TRUE BLOOD and all the current sagas that depict vampires like twenty-something supermodels. Author R. H. Greene wants to put the monster back into vampire fiction, and that's why he wrote INCARNADINE: THE TRUE MEMOIRS OF COUNT DRACULA, a just-released "origin myth" for Dracula and his three "wives" written as if by Dracula himself that hopes to do for vampires what Gregory Maguire's WICKED did for the Witches of Oz.

"Like a lot of teen culture, I think TWILIGHT is basically an overwrought metaphor for the emotional perils of dating," Greene says. "You know, Edward Cullen as the bad boy the world won't let you be with because he's too dangerous and you're too pure. That just doesn't speak to me, and I don't think I'm alone."

According to Greene, INCARNADINE tries to do something TWILIGHT can't. "Something closer to what WICKED does, which is to give an entirely fresh perspective on a character we all think we know.

"And it's for grown-ups," Greene adds. "It has to be. Violence, heresy, erotic compulsion - they're at the heart of Dracula's story, because, for me, they're at the heart of what Bram Stoker originally wrote."

To "get into character" as Dracula, Greene relocated to Bulgaria and lived in a ramshackle farmhouse in a remote village near the Romanian border. In Bulgaria, Greene did virtually all the writing on INCARNADINE and its Victorian-era follow-up THE CHARNEL HOUSE, completed last July and currently being rewritten.

"It was like finding a time machine," Greene says. "It brought me as close as I could get to living in the Middle Ages, the era Dracula comes from. Because despite a few conveniences and a lot of bottled beer, the life of a Bulgarian village is much the same as it was 500 years ago. There are superstitions. People live and die where they're born, and grow most of what they eat. There was even a Medieval-era stone cross at the mouth of the village, supposedly put there to ward off the plague."

Virtually no one spoke English, which Greene found "useful. Most days, the only meaningful conversation I could have was with myself. I think that's what a memoir is - a conversation with the self.

"And I was like a unicorn to them - the only American they'd ever seen. Dracula is a sort of unicorn too. He's a mythical beast, an object of fascination and wonder. It helped me to feel what he might be feeling, while living in a place where he might have lived. I couldn't figure out a way to become a vampire, and I was short a few wives. So this was the next best thing."

INCARNADINE: THE TRUE MEMOIRS OF COUNT DRACULA is available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and in better bookstores everywhere.

America's greatest fears become reality in John Davis' "Prussian Blue," published by iUniverse. The novel is set in the near future as President Barack Obama begins the withdrawal of American military troops from the Middle East, however, tragedy strikes and threats of WWIII put the country's safety at risk.

It is October 2010 and the withdrawal of American forces is well underway when radical Islamic groups from Iran and Saudi Arabia destroy a United States Navy battle group while steaming into the Persian Gulf. After declaring this assault an unprovoked "act of aggression," the President orders the redeployment of soldiers, ships and supplies, but shortly thereafter, the priorities change when the United States is attacked. Determined to cripple America's government, financial markets and infrastructure, the terrorists have devised an evil plan to drive Americans inland and our once great and prosperous nation into obscurity.

"Prussian Blue" follows Dr. Rex Bent's suspicion of an Islamic group's relation to sick Asian sailors found near Texas and Louisiana. Dr. Bent relays his theories to government agencies, but is soon framed by the terrorists and labeled a traitor. On the run from the American government, Dr. Bent and his wife stumble upon the radical group's central base in Whiskey Bay, Louisiana. The Bents realize that America's survival depends on their actions.

Complacency is a result of preoccupation, and with America's focus on national political topics, "Prussian Blue" hits close to home. Davis incorporates his expertise in healthcare as a catalyst for Bent's discovery of the terrorists' plans. The author utilizes the recent political climate along with his military and travel experience to amplify the suspense. For more information, please visit http://www.prussianbluenovel.com.

The 2009 Book A Brighter Future campaign, a national partnership between Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Macy's to raise awareness and support of children's literacy, has raised $6.5 million for RIF thanks to the generosity of more than 2 million Macy's customers and employees.

Since 2006, this campaign has taken place at Macy's stores during the back-to-school season to help raise money for local RIF programs and to provide reading resources to the children who need them most. The campaign provides an opportunity for Macy's customers to join the effort and have an impact on literacy in their community. By giving $3, they received a coupon for $10 off a $50 in-store purchase, and Macy's donated 100 percent of every $3 to RIF.

For every $3 RIF receives through this campaign, $1 supports local RIF programs near the Macy's store where the coupon was purchased, $1 supports RIF's Multicultural Literacy Campaign, and $1 helps RIF's ongoing efforts to provide reading resources to millions of underserved children across the country.

"Our partnership with Macy's has had a profound impact on RIF's mission," said RIF President and CEO, Carol H. Rasco. "To date, Macy's has helped provide over 3 million books to 1.2 million kids and has donated 750 hardcover multicultural book collections to schools, Head Start centers, and libraries in every state and U.S. territory. This additional support will help us reach even more children."

Thanks to Macy's, RIF has been able to expand its Multicultural Literacy Campaign, a multi-year effort that promotes and supports early childhood literacy in African American, Hispanic, and American Indian communities -- where reading scores are lowest. The success of the partnership has also enabled RIF to improve the quality of books at the local level, create and distribute multicultural book collections, and expand its public education and outreach.

RIF has also been able to create volunteer engagement tools, such as the RIF locator map -- a new interactive, multimedia experience into "the Heart of the Story" of RIF, which allows anyone who is interested to find RIF programs in their area and learn about RIF's participation in community events that help thousands of children discover the joy of reading.

True to RIF's structure as a volunteer-based organization, this year's phenomenal success can be attributed to thousands of RIF volunteers and supporters who helped engage local Macy's stores and spread the word via e-mail, telephone, word of mouth, and more. The Tell A Friend feature of the campaign, which allowed users to enter the e-mail addresses of 3 friends or more, was particularly successful. More than 4,800 individuals told close to 15,000 friends about the campaign, and anyone who used this feature was entered into a $1,000 Macy's shopping spree sweepstakes from RIF -- the winner is Jan Roberts of San Pedro, Calif.

"On behalf of all the children RIF serves, I would like to thank those who made this campaign a success," adds Rasco.

The Open Book Alliance, a coalition of librarians, legal scholars, authors, publishers, and technology companies created to counter the proposed Google Book Settlement in its current form, today issued the following statement in response to the Department of Justice's filing with the U.S. District Court:

"The Open Book Alliance is pleased with the action taken today by the Department of Justice, which we believe will help to protect the public interest and preserve competition and innovation. Despite Google's vigorous efforts to convince them otherwise, the Department of Justice recognizes that there are significant problems with terms of the proposed settlement, which is consistent with the concerns voiced with the Court by hundreds and hundreds of other parties.

"The members of the Open Book Alliance recognize the tremendous value that the mass digitization of books can bring to consumers, libraries, scholars and students. Making books searchable, readable and downloadable promises to unlock huge amounts of our collective cultural knowledge for a broader audience than was ever possible. But, as we've noted, this settlement is the wrong way to go about making this promise a reality. The current settlement proposal would stifle innovation and competition in favor of a monopoly over the access, distribution, and pricing of the largest collection of digital books in the world, and would reinforce an already dominant position in search and search advertising.

"While we will continue to study the details of the filing, the Open Book Alliance looks forward to the opportunity to inform the ongoing discussions about how to make the promise of the mass digitization of books a reality."

FOX News went out of its way to insult Judicial Watch/ Freedom Watch Founder Larry Klayman whose next appearance on the network just might be when hell freezes over, apparently due to criticism of FOX TV chairman Roger Ailes in Klayman's new book, "Whores."

That seemed to be the message when a top FOX producer, apparently at Ailes' direction, returned a review copy to the publisher's publicity firm in Boca Raton, Florida marked "return to sender."

"Because this was such a hypocritical act from a news network, I'm going to frame the partially opened package returned to TransMedia Group," Klayman said. The firm represents New Chapter Publisher in Sarasota, Florida.

"This is a reminder the First Amendment does not apply in some sectors of the media," Klayman said.

"Here's the leading cable news network that cries foul when President Obama avoids it, yet thinks nothing of blackballing a critic and won't even look at a book from an author it dislikes.

"Mr. Ailes, tear down this wall of hypocrisy. You have no problem criticizing MSNBC and CNN, so why can't I, a conservative to boot, criticize you and your network?"

WHORES: Why and How I Came to Fight the Establishment, is Klayman's hard-hitting expose about corruption, abuse and lapsed ethics in the U.S. government, judiciary and media scheduled for release in October by New Chapter Publisher.

Originally signed by Judith Regan, Whores was put on hold after the O.J. Simpson biography fiasco, until HarperCollins announced it would publish it, then killed it just as pre-sales were coming in at both Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble and at Klayman's Freedom Watch.

"I could only logically conclude Rupert Murdoch, HarperCollins' owner, killed the book ex post facto. Given my criticism of his network, I figured it was decided WHORES was too hot to handle."

Klayman is a well-known watchdog and thorn in the side of many of DC's elite because of his relentless pursuit of reform, regardless of political party.

The only lawyer ever to have obtained a court ruling that a U.S. president committed a crime, he provides startling answers to Washington's most controversial issues. Publisher Piero Rivolta said, "WHORES will provoke thought and dialogue, but regrettably not on FOX."

In May, 2004, Tim received the news that his 42-year-old wife Sara had suffered an acute stroke. With three children still at home and the oldest child heading off to Iraq to serve in his first tour of duty, Tim's family and church rallied to support the family.

After 10 days in ICU, Tim was told his wife would never walk, talk, or interact with people again. This was devastating news, but Tim did not give up hope.

After 3 months in-patient at Baylor Rehabilitation, the recommendation was that his wife needed to be moved to a nursing home because she would need 24x7 care the rest of her life. Tim refused because he was still seeing improvements.

Relying on his faith and continued support from his church and family, he fought the insurance companies to get Sara into the Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS). CNS treats Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). A stroke is a form of a TBI. Despite getting his wife into CNS, insurance carriers across state lines attempted to move Sara out of CNS.

Tim chronicles his wife's amazing recovery and his battles to insure that his wife continued at CNS. After 3 months at CNS in-patient, Sara went home and walked up the stairs without help. After another year in out-patient rehabilitation, Sara recovered to the point where she now drives, takes care of her children, and has returned to work at Eastfield Junior College in Mesquite, TX.

"Too many people are written off and end up in nursing homes requiring expensive assisted living at the taxpayer's expense," Tim explained. "750,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year with a permanent impairment. Sara is an example of where investment in rehabilitation prevented excessive long-term costs to the taxpayers for assisted living." Further, he indicated "I am a fiscal conservative, but I believe in health care reform and that the right dialogue can result in savings to society."

The coveted award went to the ground-breaking Robotic Surgery: Theory and Operative Technique by Drs Farid Gharagozloo and Farzad Najam.

Speaking about the award, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, Head of Science and Ethics at the BMA said: "The two authors deserve the highest of praise for this unique reference book that provides a complete overview of the techniques used in robotic surgery. . .This is an exciting and revolutionary branch of medicine that is going to play an ever expanding role in patient care in the coming decades. All books receiving this distinction were automatically shortlisted for first prize in their respective categories. Of the seven books shortlisted in the Surgery category, three were published by McGraw-Hill Medical with Robotic Surgery taking first prize before winning the competition's overall award.

In response to Thursday's announcement from the Chicago Transit Authority that it would immediately ban more than 250 bus ads for the film "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell," co-writer and producer Tucker Max is issuing a statement about it to the media:

"Bite me."

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20090918/NY78153 )

The recent ban is the culmination of a two month long effort by angry anti-male groups on college campuses. What began as a series of protests at a movie screening in North Carolina has grown into a multi-state campaign designed to label the film a promoter of "rape culture." This week the group took advantage of the movie's advertisements in Chicago to bring more attention to themselves at the expense of the film.

"This is the perfect example of a ridiculous group of kooky activists bullying the media into propagating a minority viewpoint. They've purposely manipulated my work -- which is a satire and a comedy -- to further their own agenda and shamelessly exploited the rape and domestic violence issues to get national attention," said Max.

The CTA's decision to pull the bus advertisements was undoubtedly related to the email and telephone campaign promoted by SAFER CAMPUS (Students Active for Ending Rape) and an article published by Chicago Reader in which the author predicted the ads would be removed while simultaneously admitting that he'd not actually seen them.

"All I have to say to these kooks and trolls is bite me. You can slander and libel me on the internet or attack my advertisements but you will not shut this movie down. Not under any circumstances," Max said.

In response to the loss of audiences in Chicago, Rudius Media and Darko Entertainment, the two companies behind the film, are announcing that they are doubling their internet advertising budget and expanding print and television ads to other, more open minded cities.

Max was adamant that he not only doesn't hate women, he loves them, "That's the question I have constantly asked that the protestors have never addressed, because they can't: 'If my art is misogynist and promotes violence against women, then why are half of my fans women?' They don't answer the question because they can't. Women are not stupid. They would not support me if I hated them, and the fact that they come out in the hundreds of thousands to buy my book and go to my movie is proof that I not only love women, but my art is in fact pro-woman. The facts are on my side because I am right."

Max concluded with, "Screw those protestors if they can't a take a joke."

About "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" and Tucker Max

"I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" the book sprung from the legendary website TuckerMax.com, and has become the biggest book to ever come off the internet. It has spent four years on the best seller list, sold almost 1 million copies and being hailed by the New York Times as the book that started a new literary movement, "fratire."

"I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" the movie was written and produced by Tucker Max and Nils Parker, and opens Friday September 25th.

The author Tucker Max received his BA from the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1998. He attended Duke Law School on an academic scholarship, where he graduated with a JD in 2001 (despite the fact that he neglected to buy any of his textbooks for his final two years and spent part of one semester -- while still enrolled in classes -- living in Cancun). His book, "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell," has spent four years on the NY Times Best Seller List and has 1 million books in print. He co-wrote and produced the movie based on his book, also titled "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell." He has also been credited with being the originator and leader of a new literary genre, "fratire," and was nominated to Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential List in 2009. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his dog, Murph.

The main character in Christina Giles's book, "How High Can You Fly?" is a tiny ant. He is curious about the other animals around him and asks about their unique talents. The eagle can soar to great heights and look down on the wonders of the earth. The jaguar can run fast and catch its prey.

The eagle, jaguar and also the caterpillar, snake, giraffe and kangaroo all laugh at the little ant and wonder about his purpose in the world. However, the little ant shows them all that he is strong and that he can lift immense weight.

Children learn from this story that no matter how small or insignificant or different they might feel, they still have worth in this world and can accomplish anything that they dare to dream.

When kids can more readily identify Pokemon(TM) characters than trees, birds, and flowers, and when they spend over one-third of their waking hours in front of a screen, it's time to help them become more involved with the natural world. Get Out! 150 Easy Ways for Kids and Grown-Ups to Get Into Nature and Build a Greener Future, by Judy Molland (Free Spirit Publishing), is filled with fun and simple tips for parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers to help kids connect with nature.

A relationship with nature is crucial for children. It can aid in the fight against obesity, reduce stress, and ease tension. Studies have shown that being exposed to nature can improve memory, concentration, and grades. And living a greener lifestyle excites children and encourages them in their role as future keepers of the environment. Richard Louv, author of the bestselling adult book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, has said, "Get Out! is full of fun activities to inspire a love of nature along with a desire to protect it."

Award-winning teacher and writer Judy Molland has organized the book's 150 engaging activities, projects, games, and tips into sections on the outdoors, green living, the 3 Rs (reducing, reusing, recycling), and advocacy. Molland includes links to websites and organizations where readers will find additional instructions and resources. For example, a tip on building a bat house directs the reader to a woodworking website that offers free plans. The book also includes a list of green and earth-friendly books, organizations, and websites that make connecting with nature easy and enjoyable for the individual reader, as well as for educators, youth leaders, and others.

Judy Molland knows first-hand about the pleasures and rewards of getting out into nature. An avid hiker, backpacker, and rock climber, she is a leader with her local Sierra Club chapter. The author of Straight Talk About Schools Today (Free Spirit Publishing), she is contributing education editor for Dominion Parenting Media, the largest syndicate of parenting magazines in the United States. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Parents, Instructor, Newsday, and on Parenthood.com. For more information, visit www.judymolland.com.

There's a football/school match-up this fall and millions of kids across the U.S. will benefit if you get in the game. Top names in education and in football - Scholastic Inc. and Super Bowl MVPs Eli and Peyton Manning - are joining forces and inviting America's teachers and students, along with several key charity partners to join them in bringing more than one million books to kids in need across the U.S. via Scholastic Book Clubs' ClassroomsCare program.

"We were thrilled when the Mannings accepted our invitation to be the first-ever Ambassadors of Reading for ClassroomsCare," said Judy Newman, President of Scholastic Book Clubs. "This program has been enormously successful by distributing more than 9 million books since 2001 to kids in need through charity partners like Reach Out and Read and Save the Children. This year, we'll also be coordinating with the Mannings' youth charities, including the Peyton Manning PeyBack Foundation and The Eli Manning Children's Clinics, and our hope is that even more students will participate."

Scholastic will also be publishing a new picture book, Family Huddle, featuring America's most famous football family, the Mannings. Kids will enjoy reading about Eli, Peyton and their older brother Cooper when they were kids, and about their mom, Olivia, and dad, former NFL star Archie Manning.

ClassroomsCare is an annual challenge to the one million classrooms that use Scholastic Book Clubs. Participating classes read 100 books, triggering a donation of books from Scholastic Book Clubs to ClassroomsCare's charity partners. The books are then donated throughout the year to kids in preschool to middle school who in many cases would not otherwise have books of their own.

Classrooms keep track of books read on posters and online, and then tell Scholastic when they've finished. Any books kids read in the classroom, with their parents or on their own count toward the goal. Teachers also can use lesson plans and activities available at http://classroomscare.scholastic.com to incorporate this program into their curriculum.

More than 1 million classrooms have participated in ClassroomsCare since its founding in 2001, helping Scholastic Book Clubs to donate more than 9 million books to kids.

By the numbers:

ClassroomsCare by the numbers = literacy all around:

  • 27,114,500* - kids have read for ClassroomsCare since 2001
  • 9,000,000 - books donated to charities through ClassroomsCare
  • 1,084,580 - classrooms have participated in ClassroomsCare

  • 117,458,000 - Total Books Read because of ClassroomsCare

*The number of kids who have read for ClassroomsCare was calculated by multiplying the number of participating classrooms by 25.

Scholastic Book Clubs is a division of Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL), the global children's publishing, education and media company.

About Scholastic

Scholastic Corporation (Nasdaq: SCHL) is the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books and a leader in educational technology and children's media. Scholastic creates quality educational and entertaining materials and products for use in school and at home, including children's books, magazines, technology-based products, teacher materials, television programming, film, videos and toys. The Company distributes its products and services through a variety of channels, including proprietary school-based book clubs and school-based book fairs, retail stores, schools, libraries, television networks and the Company's internet site, www.scholastic.com.

Musicians love to say that every song tells a story, but they are usually tight-lipped about the story behind the song. Was it really scribbled on a napkin? What love interest was the real inspiration? If we knew the real story behind our favorite songs, would we ever listen to them the same way again?

Chicken Soup for the Soul(R) has partnered with veteran Hollywood publicist, talent manager, and celebrity booker Jo-Ann Geffen for the first all-celebrity book from the top-selling brand. Geffen peels back the curtain on 101 songs, songwriters, and artists with the upcoming release of Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song (Chicken Soup for the Soul, LLC, November 10, 2009, 978-1-935096-40-5, $14.95). Jo-Ann Geffen is credited as editor along with Chicken Soup for the Soul co-founders Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The foreword is by Lamont Dozier, who is credited as an architect of the Motown sound.

The book reflects on many of our favorite songs that trace our lives through all genres of music. Some of those who tell their very personal stories include hitmakers Richie Sambora, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Etheridge, John Legend, the Backstreet Boys' Howie Dorough, Kanye West, Jewel and classic rock performer/songwriters like Chicago's Robert Lamm, Foreigner's Mick Jones, and Daryl Hall and John Oates; and alternative rockers Aaron Lewis of Staind and Corey Taylor of Slipknot. Readers will learn the story behind pop classics by Barry Manilow, Hal David, Diane Warren, and Paul Anka, rockers Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains and Joan Jett, as well as from R&B songmasters including Nathan Morris on the Boyz II Men/Mariah Carey hit "One Sweet Day," Walter Orange of the Commodores, Smokey Robinson, and Earth Wind and Fire's Philip Bailey and country singer/songwriters Tracy Lawrence, Ray Stevens, and Pam Tillis.

Some bring laughter, others bring tears, but all are insightful and great reading for music fans, aficionados or people who just like a good story. Each of the tales is accompanied by a photo and the lyrics for the song that is discussed.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, LLC, publishes all the latest titles in the famous Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, which are distributed through Simon and Schuster, Inc. Since 1993, books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series have sold more than 112 million copies, with titles translated into more than 40 languages. Larry Klayman, founder of Judicial Watch and now Freedom Watch, has announced that he will personally seek to serve fraudulently elected Islamic Iranian President Ahmadimajad with a class action complaint, filed on behalf of Akbar Mohammadi and all oppressed, tortured and murdered Iranians seeking freedom, by Nasrin Mohammadi, the sister of Akbar. The case, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., can be found on Freedom Watch's website at www.freedomwatchusa.org, and is detailed in Mr. Klayman's soon to be released book, WHORES: Why and How I Came to Fight the Establishment, is now available for presale at www.borders.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, and other on-line booksellers.

This effort by Klayman to serve the Islamic Iranian president in person during his visit to the U.N. on September 23 is unprecedented and will show the world that it needs to do more to support the brave Iranians now fighting for freedom in their homeland. "Thus far, the Obama administration has not even paid lip service to the freedom movement in Iran, but instead seeks to negotiate with these terrorist despots. The quickest way to bring freedom to Iran, remove the nuclear threat, and bring greater stability and security to the Middle East the world, is to bring these Islamic fascists to justice and remove them from power," stated Klayman.

About Larry Klayman

i> PROFITS AREN'T EVERYTHING, THEY'RE THE ONLY THING: No-Nonsense Advice from the Ultimate Contrarian and Small Business Guru ($24.99 hardcover/HarperCollins Publishers), a new book by small business guru George Cloutier, goes on sale today. Cloutier's hard-knock lessons for small business owners have already stirred controversy, with Reuters describing the book as "a literary slap in the face to small and medium-sized business owners."

The buzz around PROFITS AREN'T EVERYTHING, THEY'RE THE ONLY THING has been building. Publishers Weekly calls it "a forceful debut" and says "Cloutier's book is loaded with valuable advice on how to get back on track and stay in the black in any economic environment." Booklist noted that "many of his regulations will amaze, shock, and awe small business owners. . . Harsh ways to work? Yes, yet all his principles are founded on a success that's hard to argue with." Even Reuters acknowledges "Cloutier's impressive track record. (He) has made a successful career out of digging hapless businesses out of debt and mismanagement by demanding his clients fire dead weight, own up to their laziness and stop making excuses. And it works."

Cloutier is the founder and CEO of American Management Services, a management firm that specializes in turning around small and mid-sized businesses. Cloutier and his company have worked with 6,000 companies across 400 industries. He is a coach, lecturer, and speaker, and appears regularly on national television, most recently discussing the economic crisis. He is also the cochairman of Partner America, a strategic partnership between his company and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Cloutier has been dubbed "The Turnaround Ace" by BusinessWeek.

"I've developed some strong, controversial, and 'tough love' points of view on what small businesses need to succeed on their path to turnarounds and much greater profitability," Cloutier says. He describes PROFITS AREN'T EVERYTHING as "a tell-it-as-it-really-is and sometimes contrarian book on what I've seen happen" and acknowledges that some of his advice will "clearly upset conventional thinking." Some examples:

  • Teamwork is Vastly Overrated
  • Love Your Business More Than Your Family
  • The Best Family Business Has One Member
  • You're Not in Business to Pay Your Vendors
  • Give Up Golf, Retreats, Off-Sites, and Trade Shows
  • It's Not the Economy, Stupid, It's You!

"The nation's 23 million small businesses employ 60 million Americans--almost 40% of the nation's workforce," he notes. "Small business is the third largest economy in the world, trailing only the U.S. and Japan. It produces 50% of GDP and generates 70% of new jobs." Cloutier says his book is intended to be "a call to action for small and mid-sized business owners to change their ways or face more decline and failure."

PROFITS AREN'T EVERYTHING, THEY'RE THE ONLY THING: No-Nonsense Rules from the Ultimate Contrarian and Small-Business Guru, by George Cloutier with Samantha Marshall. Publication Date: September 15, 2009. $24.99, hardcover. Published by HarperCollins.

In his recent speech at a Virginia high school, President Obama called Mohandas "Mahatma" Gandhi a "real hero of mine," describing the Indian icon as someone with whom he would like to dine.

When a student at the high school asked Obama who he would choose if he could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, the president picked Gandhi. He said, "He is somebody whom I find a lot of inspiration in. He inspired Dr. King." Yet Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI) contends that in reality Gandhi was so deeply prejudiced against black-skinned people and committed to the Hindu caste system that he would never have sat for dinner with Obama.

"We really expected Obama to pick his role models more appropriately," said J. Pal Singh, a director for OFMI. "There's no excuse for his ignorance. Casual students of the subject can easily find information about Gandhi's racism, which has even been discussed multiple times on the House floor by African-American Congressman Edolphus Towns. Has political expedience caused Obama to refuse to acknowledge the historical abuse of his own race?"

The claims made by OFMI were recently presented to the academic world by Col. G.B. Singh and Dr. Tim Watson, authors of "Gandhi Under Cross-Examination" (Sovereign Star, 2009). Their book discusses Gandhi's infamous train journey, when he was reportedly thrown off a train in Pietermaritzburg after refusing to move from a first to a third-class seat to accommodate a white man's demands. Arguing that Gandhi fabricated the entire incident, the authors also delve into Gandhi's racist activities in South Africa, particularly questioning Gandhi's motivation for voluntarily serving as a Sergeant-Major in a 1906 British war against the black Zulus.

One major incident which Singh and Watson allege as proof of Gandhi's racism occurred in 1895 in Durban, South Africa. The authors claim that the local post office had two doors: one for whites and the other shared by upper-caste Indians and black Africans. Gandhi was offended at having to share a door with the black South Africans and successfully petitioned the authorities to allow a third door for Indian use only. Furthermore, the authors speculate that Gandhi's promotion of segregation was so extreme that he may have contributed to the rise of apartheid in South Africa.

Discussing the conclusions which scholars might reach upon an academic reevaluation of Gandhi's racial beliefs, J. Pal Singh said, "The evidence is damning that Gandhi's 21 years in South Africa were spent promoting racial segregation from blacks. Gandhi campaigned for a three-tiered society, with whites at the top of the ladder, Indians just below, and blacks pushed to the bottom rung. It is embarrassing for our first black president to uphold an anti-black racist as his personal hero."

Borders Group, Inc. (NYSE: BGP) has attained a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2010 Corporate Equality Index published by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, a civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) equality. This marks the fifth time -- and the third consecutive year -- that Borders Group has attained a perfect score on the Index since the HRC began publishing it in 2002.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20060208/BORDERSGRPLOGO )

This year's Index rated a total of 590 businesses on a scale of 0 to 100 percent on their treatment of GLBT employees and consumers. Ratings are based on factors like non-discrimination policies, diversity training and benefits for domestic partners and transgender employees.

"We are honored to once again receive such a distinguished rating," said Borders Group Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing Anne Kubek. "We have a deep-rooted enthusiasm for diversity here at Borders and we value the talent and expertise of our diverse team."

Borders Group established a diversity initiative more than seven years ago to support the business imperative of diversity in the workplace. Through the work of an internal diversity task force and related subcommittees and advisory councils, the initiative focuses on four strategic cornerstones of diversity: reflecting the communities Borders Group serves; anticipating and surpassing the expectations of diverse customers; formalizing a supplier diversity program; and building internal and external awareness of Borders Group's commitment to diversity.

As part of its diversity program, Borders Group has several Employee Action Groups (EAGs) that support diversity efforts in the workplace, marketplace, and the local community. The GLBT EAG advocates for GLBT employees by raising awareness of GLBT issues in the corporate office, and exploring ways to extend the Borders' commitment to diversity to customers and the local community.

In advance of today's House Judiciary Committee hearing on the proposed Google Book Settlement, the Open Book Alliance released a list of seven issues related to the settlement that it believes are misunderstood and worthy of further discussion.

"There's been a lot of questions about the nature of this settlement, and, unfortunately, there remains some inaccurate information out there," said Peter Brantley, director, Internet Archive and co-chair of the Open Book Alliance. "We sincerely hope that today's hearing helps clarify some of the facts about the settlement, and we encourage the members of the House Judiciary Committee to explore these areas in its questioning of Google and its partners."

FICTION: The proposed settlement is "non-exclusive" and would create a Books Rights Registry (BRR) to license books to Google's competitors.

FACT: The deal would create a de facto exclusive license for Google because the deal grants no rights to the BRR to license books to competitors -- copyright owners will have to license Google's competitors voluntarily, while Google gets an involuntary, virtual compulsory license through class action process. As a result, only Google receives a license to "orphan books", whose owners won't show up to license competitors and which comprise an estimated 70% of books. In short, the settlement all but guarantees that Google would have permanent competitive advantages around comprehensiveness and cost. This is one reason why the Department of Justice is investigating the proposed deal and numerous non-profit organizations, academics and other stakeholders have condemned it.

FICTION: The proposed settlement agreement merely resolves private litigation between private parties, which is a good thing.

FACT: The deal far exceeds the bounds of a typical legal settlement. It would tread directly on Congress' jurisdiction, privatizing important copyright and public policy decisions historically made by Congress. It abuses class action procedure to create an exclusive joint venture between Google, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Authors' Guild, strengthening Google's dominance in search and creating a cartel for the sale of digitized books. It would bind nearly every copyright owner of every book published before 2009 throughout the world, and thus create, as the U.S. Register of Copyrights said, "a compulsory license for the benefit of one company."

FICTION: Google is paying copyright owners an enormous sum of $125 million for the use of their books.

FACT: In fact, the deal would give a handful of lawyers involved $45 million, the same amount that will be spread in small amounts to the millions of copyright owners whose books were copied by Google. Authors and publishers would get only 1/3 of Google's outlay, paid at $60 per book only if Google has already scanned the book into its database. Google would pay nothing under the settlement for any scanning done after January 2009.

FICTION: Google Books is about finding old books and making them available -- it's not about web search.

FACT: Google's copying activities were initially focused on feeding its search engine. That continues to be its primary motivation. The proposed settlement would provide Google enormous benefits by using books to improve the artificial intelligence (AI) behind all of its services, including its dominant web search and advertising, via valuable "non-display" uses. Under the proposed settlement, authors and publishers would get paid nothing for any of these uses. As one Google engineer explained, "We're not scanning all those books to be read by people. We're scanning them to be read by [our] AI."

FICTION: Congress can fix any problems with the proposed settlement by passing orphan works legislation.

FACT: The deal would usurp the role of Congress and grant special rules for Google -- and only Google -- to use orphan works that are very different and much more advantageous to Google than the rules contained in the orphan works bills considered last term in Congress. Orphan works reform can only be enacted through legislation, not class action fiat, and must be made available to all potential users -- educational, non-profit and commercial institutions alike.

FICTION: Authors and publishers can tell Google not to use their books in Google Books, so their copyright rights are preserved.

FACT: An author's right to remove her book from Google's database expires in 2011. Given the millions of absent and orphan rights holders, and the fact that the commercial service may not even launch by then, many rights holders will be unaware of this irrevocable loss of control over their copyrights. Finally, if Google does not comply with an author's instructions, she is limited to bringing arbitration over Google's "best efforts" and will have forfeited the ability to file a copyright infringement lawsuit.

FICTION: Copyright owners who don't like the settlement can simply opt-out of the class action and preserve their rights against Google.

FACT: The deal would establish Google as the new superpower in the online book marketplace, leaving those authors who opt-out at a substantial commercial disadvantage.

The Open Book Alliance is a coalition of librarians, legal scholars, authors, publishers, and technology companies created to counter the proposed Google Book Settlement in its current form. The Open Book Alliance can be found online at http://www.openbookalliance.org, and on Twitter @OBAlliance.

Zondervan, a world leader in Christian communications, has signed an exclusive agreement with Dr. Rick Warren, pastor, leader and author of the bestselling book, The Purpose Driven(R) Life, to publish his next major book release. Seven years after the success of his signature title that became the No. 1 all-time bestselling hardcover non-fiction book in publishing history, Warren has gone back to the writing studio to create The Hope You Need.

"My motivation as an author has always been the message, not the market and I have been waiting for the right time, until I had something to say that would speak to the personal and societal problems we all face," Warren said. "With unemployment in some parts of the country running as high as 15 percent, many individuals - including my own congregation - are feeling the pinch of this recession, and are in need of hope."

Inspired by an eight-part sermon series Warren taught on the Lord's Prayer at Saddleback Church in Orange County, Calif. earlier this year, The Hope You Need invites readers to plug into the unparalleled power that exists within the words of the best-known prayer on the planet, through which Jesus taught his disciples to pray. With his classic approachability, passion and candor, Warren provides helpful insight and much-needed inspiration in these tough times regarding every area of life that God tells us turn over to Him, including fear, resentment, worry, guilt and loneliness.

"We are thrilled to partner once again with our long-time friend to bring this timeless and timely message to everyone," said Zondervan CEO, Moe Girkins. "Gaining insight and meaning to the way Jesus prayed to His Father no doubt will inspire all of us."

The Hope You Need will release simultaneously in English and Spanish worldwide on November 17, 2009.

Zippity do dah, lots of sunshine money is coming the way of Pennsylvania homeowners who are installing solar electric systems.

Brand new state and federal programs are making it possible for Pennsylvania residents to save more than 50 percent on installation, cut electricity bills for 25 years and even generate income from solar panels on their property. But understanding the ins & outs of these programs can be complicated and overwhelming.

In her just-published book "Pennsylvania Homeowner's Guide to Solar Electricity," Dr. Vera Cole goes through the new state rebate program and solar technology in plain and simple language. Cole, Director for Local Power with the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association (MAREA), starts with the basics of solar electricity production and site selection -- solar panels are finicky about their sunshine -- before addressing "what's the payback?"

Readers are guided through step-by-step examples of how to assess their property for solar, how to estimate the size and cost of a system suitable for their household, how to choose an installer and methods for estimating rebates, tax credits, future savings and income.

The book provides an unbiased look at expiring electricity price caps and the topsy-turvy world of renewable energy credits or RECs, where utilities pay homeowners for the solar power they produce. This new concept, not so well-understood at times, provides a platform for inflated financial claims. Cole's book avoids the hype and presents a clear picture of solar as an economically viable source of power that is clean, safe and secure.

Unique to the book is a companion website where Cole, a mechanical engineer who holds a doctorate in information science, provides a financial calculator and chapter-by-chapter links and timely updates. The calculator, SunnyMoney (www.themarea.org/solar.shtml), is free, but the rest of the website is restricted to book owners.

The book is available for $14.95 through www.themarea.org or Amazon.com.

The publisher, MAREA, is a nonprofit Pennsylvania group dedicated to renewable energy education and organizer of the Pennsylvania Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival www.paenergyfest.com. The largest in the region, the fifth annual festival is Sept 18, 19, 20 in Kempton, PA, and includes 150 exhibitors and 100 talks.

Oce Print 09 Booth 1863 -- Oce, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, today announces the new Oce JetStream(R) 3300 system, providing the industry's fastest inkjet printing on a 30" wide web. With a speed of 492 feet per minute (150 meters per minute), the Oce JetStream 3300 system delivers the highest productivity in its class.

With the introduction of this new Oce JetStream system, Oce now offers two models in the Oce JetStream 30" web class: the Oce JetStream 3300 system and the Oce JetStream 2800 system running at 427 fpm (130 mpm). The wider print width offered by these systems allows customer to print more work in a single pass and helps to boost overall printing productivity while reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Both systems are available as "black only" versions with field upgrades to a full CMYK color configuration and can be equipped with a fifth print head for a future additional spot color.

Continued Growth of Oce JetStream Family Benefits Market

Oce JetStream productivity and adaptability give printers powerful resources to compete in a challenging marketplace. The versatile Oce JetStream platform is helping companies of all kinds make the transition to digital printing for applications once the domain of offset, such as books and newspapers. Oce JetStream technology also benefits users with TransPromo, direct marketing, triggered mailings, and other critical applications. With the flexibility to support a wider range of color applications, print professionals can expand their services - and keep them affordable.

"Oce continues to prove its commitment to the ink jet market. We are pleased to take Oce JetStream productivity to a new level with the speed and 30" web of the Oce JetStream 3300 system," said Guy Broadhurst, Vice President of New Technology, Production Printing Systems division, Oce North America. "The Oce JetStream family continues to expand and provide new capabilities for customers to take on more types of jobs. Users gain immediate return with better ways to produce books, newspapers and other applications. With Oce JetStream upgradeability, customers can pursue long-term strategies for producing profitable jobs in full color, while immediately benefiting from the cost and speed efficiencies of digital inkjet printing."

Upgradability to Maximize Investment Protection

In line with the Oce commitment to investment protection, the Oce JetStream family offers a growth path from monochrome to full color configurations and more, ensuring complete flexibility to meet long-term business goals. All models are available as "black only" versions with field upgrades available to a full CMYK color configuration. An optional fifth color lets customers add specialty inks along with their CMYK printing. Combined with an Oce PRISMA(R) front-end server, Oce JetStream printing systems deliver best-in-class productivity through uninterrupted, highly automated production workflow.

By building a production workflow based on the proven core technology of the Oce JetStream family, customers gain a full, integrated inkjet strategy that can grow with them as they pursue new opportunities. Along with the same ink and inkjet heads, the Oce JetStream 3300 system is based on Oce DigiDot(R) inkjet technology and Oce SRA(R) MP controller architecture of the Oce JetStream family. Consistent use of common components allows quick time-to-market for new options and delivers high reliability, durability and uptime. Oce DigiDot printing enables the highest output quality and productivity with variable dot size for added flexibility. The scalable Oce SRA MP controller offers full engine speed, variable data printing in AFP/IPDS workflow, with built-in data integrity, error recovery and full color management. It also includes the Adobe(R) PDF engine to allow efficient "white paper" printing to produce monochrome variable data concurrently with a full color form. This one-pass printing efficiency results in reduced waste and storage costs, more productive workflow, and lower TCO.

New Dimension of Productivity for Digital Book and Newspaper Printing

Newspaper publishers, book manufacturers and other traditional printers struggle with rising costs and shifting market conditions, and the Oce JetStream 3300 system gives them the ability to adopt more practical business models. Digital book printing is being transformed as publishers and printers move from offset to digital production. With the new speed and wider print width of the Oce JetStream 3300 system, more books can be produced in less time and with less waste. For example, the system can print a typical 5"x7", 150-page pocket book pack in less than 0.75 seconds. The powerful Oce SRA MP controller rips a complete book upfront; the ripped books can then be printed in copy mode in full engine speed. With the wide web Oce JetStream systems, customers can print 12- and 16-page book signatures and for two-up tabloid newspapers in their original formats. This maximizes production efficiency and solidifies digital production as a viable alternative to offset book printing.

For industries like newspapers, the transition from traditional offset printing to high-speed digital production is essential for long-term economic strength. As publishers seek effective yet affordable ways to reach and maintain readership, the faster Oce JetStream 3300 system makes it possible to create hyperlocalized editions and individualized issues that can compete with other delivery channels. The wider web also offers the advantage of printing newspapers in their original formats, avoiding steps and expense to modify applications.

First shipments of the Oce JetStream 3300 systems are planned for the second quarter of 2010.

This November, Fancy Nancy fans (and their parents) can enjoy a weekend of free literary events at the second annual Children's Book Festival in Grand Cayman. Families interested in attending the festival on November 28-29, featuring a full line-up of international and local authors, have the option of booking special packages from Camana Bay's partner hotels.

Hosted by Camana Bay in collaboration with Books & Books and the Cayman Islands Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the Children's Book Festival will be headlined by Fancy Nancy series author and illustrator Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser. The best-selling children's series has a dedicated fan base of young children across the globe, captivated by Glasser's pen and ink illustrations and O'Connor's clever writing. During the festival, the duo will be reading from their new book Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas, available in stores this November. Also participating is Jacqueline Preiss Weitzmann, author of the You Can't Take a Balloon Into. . . series. The playful books introduce children to well-known art and artifacts as the main character explores famous museums.

The festival kicks off on Saturday November 28 at Camana Bay when Jane O'Connor, Robin Preiss Glasser and Jacqueline Preiss Weitzmann will be joined by local authors for story readings at Books & Books. For a taste of Cayman, local traditions will also be in place throughout the festival. Drawing on Cayman's rich cultural heritage of oral storytelling, traditional Caymanian "Gimistory" performers will tell folk tales passed down from generation to generation.

In between stories, kids can take part in a range of activities and crafts outdoors on The Paseo, the town's pedestrian-only main street. A giant sandpit and games such as 'Simon Says' will entertain young tots, while crown making for little princesses, sidewalk chalking and balloon crafts are on offer for older kids. Drumming classes and traditional kite making workshops will also be available for creative youngsters to try their hand at.

On Sunday November 29 the action moves to the Dart Family Park in George Town where the Cystic Fibrosis Bedtime Story Fun Day will take place from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. Jane O'Connor, Robin Preiss Glasser and Jacqueline Preiss Weitzman will be back with more readings from their books and there will be a host of prizes and hundreds of dollars of books to be won at the game stalls, which include the popular Splat Attack and Bash the Rat. An art competition to draw the next Cystic Fibrosis Trust Christmas card, face painting, a bouncy castle, puppet shows and a barbecue will keep the family entertained all afternoon. To further appeal, children are invited to wear their favorite pajamas to the event.

All proceeds from the side stalls situated throughout the festival will go directly to the Cayman Islands Cystic Fibrosis Trust which aims to raise awareness of the disease, aid sufferers in the Cayman Islands, provide testing for future parents and training for local doctors and promote research for a cure.

In today's tight job market, many college grads are electing to continue their educations, and some are moving back in with their parents in the face of slim prospects. Even pop culture has its finger on the pulse of this reality, as evidenced in the recent movie comedy "Post Grad." Roy Reynertson http://www.RoyReynertson.com), an expert on self-marketing, however, would say that employment - or lack of it - for college graduates is no laughing matter. Through his book, How to be Ten Foot Tall and Bullet Proof in a Job Interview, and his Personal Marketing System home study course, Reynertson helps individuals find not just a job but a career.

While his system works for anyone looking to advance his or her career or get a leg up on the competition, Reynertson targets his speaking engagements to college students. The system also helps employees who have reached a plateau in their careers. He teaches workers how to create income security (he emphasizes that job security does not exist), how to ask for a raise and get it, and how to move to the next level of one's career.

"My home study course also makes a wonderful gift for anyone entering or struggling in this almost impossible job market," said Reynertson. "I really enjoy bringing my seminars to college campuses to help arm prospective grads before they face the almost impossible job market."

The home study seminar includes eight CDs with 10 hours of professionally recorded audio that focuses on:

  • How to deliver a resume that gets noticed and read, looks different from the competition and makes the applicant the employer's first choice for an interview
  • How to avoid the three biggest mistakes in a job interview
  • How to walk out a winner from each job interview
  • Three ways to follow up effectively after an interview so you get remembered
  • How to develop multiple "marketing pillars"
  • How to create "demand pull" and be perceived as an expert in your field
  • How to develop a database of hundreds, even thousands, of contacts in a specific industry

What makes the system so successful, Reynertson said, is its application of marketing principles to a job-seeker's existing resources. He commented, "I specialize in out-of-the-box marketing techniques. I teach people to diversify their income with contacts and talents they already have."

"I'm way more confident in my abilities to get a job after college," said Sean Joyce, a senior at Arizona State University who recently completed the Personal Marketing System course.

The course is $97 and includes a free copy of the book - a $15 value. To order the book or the course, to arrange a speaking engagement or for more information, visithttp://www.RoyReynertson.com, or call 630-301-1115 or 877-9ROY-NOW (1-877-976-9669).

The National Federation of the Blind, the nation's oldest and largest organization of blind people and the leading advocate for access by the blind to digital information, testified before the House Judiciary Committee today that the proposed settlement between Google and authors and publishers regarding the Google Books project should be approved. The Google Books settlement will make millions of titles available to the blind and other Americans with print disabilities, providing more access to the printed word than the blind have had in all of human history.

Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, told the House Judiciary Committee: "The Google settlement is, for the blind and many others, the next step in the democratization of knowledge. That process began with the introduction of the printing press and then, for the blind, with the invention of Braille. Now technology is available that transcends the traditional limitations of both print and Braille, promising to make millions of titles available to the blind in Braille or any other format of our choice. The narrow business interests of Google's competitors must not be allowed to block Americans who cannot read print from all of the opportunities that greater access to written knowledge will make available to them. It is time for the doors of the world's great libraries to be opened and welcome to everyone."

The National Federation of the Blind also urged the United States Department of Justice, which is reviewing the terms of the settlement, to support the agreement.

"The Google Books settlement is a major step forward in advancing the civil rights of blind Americans and others who cannot read print because it substantially increases our opportunities for education and employment," President Maurer said. "The Justice Department, which is tasked with protecting the civil rights of all Americans, should respect the agreement of the parties to the settlement and allow its access provisions to be fully implemented. In doing so, the government will send a strong message that it values the participation of the blind in society and believes that we should have access to all of the information to which our sighted friends and colleagues have access."

Walmart and Jumpstart today formally announce a joint effort to highlight the importance of early education and literacy as Walmart joins Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign as its official Retail Partner. Jumpstart's work with Walmart brings a critical retail presence to support Jumpstart's Read for the Record, presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, which shines a national spotlight on literacy by creating the largest shared reading experience.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record is a celebration of reading, community service and fun to raise awareness about the importance of reading with young children to ensure they learn crucial early language and literacy skills to succeed in school and in life. The campaign also raises funding to support Jumpstart's yearlong work with preschool children in low-income communities where Jumpstart is working toward the day all children enter school prepared to succeed. This year, Jumpstart's Read for the Record has set out to break Jumpstart's reading record as adults read the same book on the same day to more than one million children across the country.

The official campaign book for the 2009 Read for the Record is a special, limited edition of the Philomel Books classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. The commemorative book includes a foreword with messages from Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira of NBC's TODAY Show, Tony-, Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress Mary Louise Parker, and entertainer, actor, author, recording artist, two-time Grammy Award winner, and NAACP Image Award winner, LL Cool J. Walmart stores nationwide are offering the official limited edition copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in support of Jumpstart's Read for the Record. All net proceeds from the book sales* will be donated to Jumpstart.

"Access to books, especially quality literature is one of the major factors of early educational success for children and Walmart is committed to doing our part to raise awareness and provide access," said Walmart Foundation president Margaret McKenna. "From our associates who are reading in Walmart stores on October 8th to customers who support Jumpstart by buying The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Walmart, we're helping to instill a love for reading in children, planting seeds for later success."

"The books we read as children provide us with treasured childhood memories," said Jumpstart's President James Cleveland. "Unfortunately, most children in low-income communities have few, if any, age-appropriate books in their homes. As a result, they miss out on the reading experiences that form the foundation for success in school and life. In fact, each year one third of America's children arrive at their first day of school without the skills necessary to succeed. At Jumpstart, we're remedying this problem by giving these young people important individualized early education programming throughout the school year."

"With Walmart's generous support of Jumpstart's Read for the Record, I am convinced that this year's campaign is going to not only break a record to raise awareness about the importance of early education, but also directly help us donate more than 250,000 official campaign books to children in need," Cleveland added. "Jumpstart is proud to have Walmart as such a dedicated partner and integral part of the 2009 Read for the Record campaign."

Jumpstart's Read for the Record will be kicked off on October 8 on NBC's TODAY Show with celebrity readers; the launch is followed by marquis events throughout the country in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Grass roots organizing efforts will also result in thousands of events planned in homes, schools, libraries, parks and community centers across the country.

Over the past three years, more than one million people have taken part in this record-breaking Campaign. Jumpstart's Read for the Record has raised more than $3 million to support Jumpstart's mission and more than 500,000 books have been donated to children in need. The campaign is further supported by presenting sponsor, Pearson Foundation and national campaign sponsors American Eagle Outfitters and Sodexo as well as Penguin Young Readers Group.

Anyone can join this record breaking celebration of reading, community service and fun - simply PLEDGE TO READ at readfortherecord.org; official campaign books are available for purchase at Walmart. For more information, visit www.readfortherecord.org - in addition to information on how to participate, the website provides information about donating books to Jumpstart children, hosting and joining shared reading events across the nation, as well as ensuring that time reading with a child in one's life is counted toward the record.

The Tolkien Trust (a UK registered charity), New Line Cinema, and HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. have resolved the lawsuit relating to the "Lord of the Rings" films.

The claim was filed in February of last year. HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. and the trustees of the JRR Tolkien Estate were co-plaintiffs in the claim, which concerned plaintiffs' participation interest in the "Lord of the Rings" films released between 2001 and 2003. The precise terms of the settlement are confidential.

Commenting on the settlement, Christopher Tolkien said: "The Trustees regret that legal action was necessary, but are glad that this dispute has been settled on satisfactory terms that will allow the Tolkien Trust properly to pursue its charitable objectives. The Trustees acknowledge that New Line may now proceed with its proposed films of 'The Hobbit.'"

Warner Bros.' President & Chief Operating Officer Alan Horn said: "We deeply value the contributions of the Tolkien novels to the success of our films and are pleased to have put this litigation behind us. We all look forward to a mutually productive and beneficial relationship in the future."

The "Lord of the Rings" films produced by New Line are among the most successful films ever created and were released in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively.

JRR Tolkien is the world-renowned author of works including "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit." The Tolkien Trust is a UK registered charity that has made grants to charitable causes all over the world totaling over $8 million in the last five years alone.

Throughout its history, New Line has created a number of enduring film franchises, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy, "The Mask," the Austin Powers titles, "Blade," "Rush Hour," "Elf," "Sex and the City" and "Wedding Crashers." New Line became a unit of Warner Bros. Entertainment in March 2008.

The National Writers Union announced today that it has joined the Open Book Alliance: a diverse coalition of writers' organizations, librarians, activists, legal scholars and corporations who object to the proposed Google Book Settlement.

"We are happy to join the Open Book Alliance, which shares many of our concerns about the proposed Google Book Settlement," said Larry Goldbetter, president of the National Writers Union/UAW Local 1981. "The proposed settlement is patently unfair to writers and could set a dangerous legal precedent."

Earlier this week, the National Writers Union called on former Vice President Al Gore, in his capacity as a senior advisor to Google, to use his considerable influence to urge Google to seek a delay in the settlement proceedings. The National Writers Union announced its objection to the proposed Google Book Settlement last month.

"Google's book scanning project is one the largest cases of copyright infringement since the United States Constitution was adopted in 1789," Goldbetter said. "The multibillion-dollar corporation scanned more than seven million different books without permission from the copyright owners. In an attempt to placate its victims, Google is throwing some crumbs to writers." Google enjoyed a net income of more than $4.5 billion last year. It is offering writers as little as $60 per infringed book and $15 per infringed article.

"It's a bad deal," Goldbetter said. "Along with the other members of the Open Book Alliance, the National Writers Union wants to promote a fair alternative to the proposed settlement."

The National Writers Union is the nation's only labor union and advocacy organization for freelance writers in all genres, media, and formats. In addition to print media writers, NWU represents electronic writers and editors of blogs, Web sites and e-newsletters. The NWU is affiliated with the United Auto Workers (UAW), which is a member of the AFL-CIO. The NWU's headquarters are at 113 University Place, 6th floor, New York, NY 10003.

ET meets Carl Sagan in Out of this World, a new book from Kids Can Press that asks whether there is life somewhere out there in the universe. Author Jacob Berkowitz takes the lofty subject of astrophysics and brings it down to earth for 8-12 year old readers. Out of This World explores the hunt for another planet that might support life, an Alien Earth. The voyage takes kids to the fantastic worlds around far-away stars. Along for the ride is a character named Ambrosia, an appealing young alien.

Since there's no scientific evidence that Earth has ever been visited by aliens, it's up to astrobiologists to turn science fantasy into fact. Robotic spacecraft sent from Earth are searching for life on moons and other planets in our solar system, and Berkowitz explains technical details in an age-appropriate, accessible manner. He presents whimsical "postcards" from exoplanets--planets outside our solar system--and introduces kids to the down-to earth scientists who study our cosmic neighbors. Out of this World is illustrated with colorful, child-friendly art that compliments the text. Visuals include gorgeous space agency photos, such as one from the Hubble Space Telescope, plus vivid illustrations by Celeste Gagnon.

Activity sections are woven throughout the book to reinforce the idea that science is fun. They include a cooking recipe for "space balls," made of sugars and proteins just like molecular clouds, and an exercise to mimic the friction created by the tidal movement of ice. . .using your hands. Kids are asked to explore questions such as: "If you could taste an old star, would it taste like burned toast?", "How do we fake a UFO photo?" and "How can you have your home PC join the search for a call from ET?"

Jacob Berkowitz is an award-winning author, journalist and playwright, whose writing combines a passion for science and storytelling. His first book, Jurassic Poop: What Dinosaurs and Others Left Behind was also published by Kids Can Press, www.kidscan.com. Berkowitz lives in Ontario, Canada.

Many centuries ago fairies, goblins and witches roamed the world. And characters like Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, the Three Little Pigs, Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel ruled. But what if everything we have ever learned about these protagonists is nothing but a bunch of bold-faced lies? Lies that are now about to be set on their heads by the stories in "Terrible Tales," all of which give the actual, veritable accounts of the princesses, talking animals, and poor, wee tykes who inhabited the cottages and castles of long ago and far away.

"Terrible Tales" (published by iUniverse) is Jennifer Gordon's collection of short stories. The origin of the fables is unclear, but legend has it that the author was a shriveled-up old hag named Felicitatus Miserius. It was this vile creature who forced the tales on the hapless Sir Jasper Gowlings who was bound by elfin law to share the stories with the world at large. Fairy tales have led us to believe that any girl who is born less than radiantly gorgeous can never be happy ... nor should she be, since homeliness goes hand in hand with selfishness, stupidity and evil. But, fortunately for the world and the delicate psyches of children everywhere, Gowlings, with the indispensable aid of Felicitatus Miserius, has now taken it upon himself to set the record straight ... rather unwillingly. Willingly or not, "Terrible Tales" has now been published and in it can be found a treasure trove for children and the young at heart everywhere ... the hidden secrets to eternal happiness.

About the Author

Jennifer Gordon was once a senior executive, leading the Human Resources and Public Affairs functions of a large, global company. As a child, she planned to be a beautiful princess with long golden hair who, after waiting a short while for her prince to come, would be whisked away to a castle where she would live happily ever after. Instead, she found herself bullied at school for being short, wearing glasses and getting better grades than the boys. From this illustrious beginning, she went on to be bullied at work. It has been her lifelong dream (second only to that of being a princess) that she be able to apply herself to building the self-esteem of children and to combating the devastating effects of bullying. Thanks to her wonderful husband, she has been able to leave the working world behind and focus on achieving these goals through her writing ... proving that there really are princes out there and dreams really do come true. This is her first book, but, be forewarned, she is already working on the sequel ... "Sickening Stories."

In his new science-fiction novel, "Rainmaker" (published by AuthorHouse), author Stephen Kuehn tells a captivating story of Earth's hopeful journey toward survival. The struggles, controversies and catastrophes in this journey to save mankind test even the strongest of heroes. Kuehn writes:

From a distance Axis City was an improbable display of intelligent
order--civilization in a desolate place most folks considered to be
uninhabitable. Its streets were arranged in neat rows, many of which
were lined with trees, all in the midst of an unforgiving wasteland
that stalked it borders like a pack of starved coyotes--desperate and
inevitable. That was the impression, anyway. Of all people, Drake
knew this impression of civility was only a mirage...another trick of
        the desert.

In Earth's ancient past, visitors from another star system placed seven stones in the earth to channel the planet's psychic energy. Like most of Earth's cosmic history, the reason for doing this has long since been forgotten, but the legend remains. The tales of the earth stones and their immense psychic powers still fascinate mankind thousands of years after the civilization that created them has moved on. It is rumored that the fourth of the seven stones, known as the heart stone, resides along a desolate lay-line running from coastal Mexico to the heart of North America.

Over the centuries, many have searched for the stones, collecting clues and continuing their endless search by process of elimination. The fourth stone is said to grant the possessor with the ability to transform thoughts into reality; it is no surprise that this is a highly coveted prize among Earth's more ambitious factions. The Illuminati, eternal in their thirst for conquest, and the ultra-secretive Reptilians are the front-runners in the pursuit of this singular relic. Their tireless search for this stone that the locals call "Rainmaker" is a smoke screen of secrecy, where the best secrets are held by those who are no longer alive to repeat them. Kuehn explains his impetus for writing "Rainmaker":

I like a good adventure. I had a roommate that rented from me a few
years ago and she was a conspiracy theorist of the highest order.
Illuminati, reptilian shape-shifters have infiltrated the world
governments, meditation can create reality, and all of that. She had
bookshelves full of books and videos about these topics. After a few
months of hearing about time-loops and alternate realities, I had a
pretty good idea what I was going to write next.

Target and The Heart of America Foundation will officially kick-off the Target Volunteers School Library Makeover program with the unveiling of one of sixteen extreme school library transformations in New York City on September 10, in support of the United We Serve nationwide service initiative. The additional unveilings, along with even more school donations, will happen across the country throughout September and October, just in time for the new school year.

With ongoing school budget cuts, the Target Volunteers School Library Makeover program helps schools provide better resources to tens of thousands of kids who need it most. In fact, studies show that students benefit from a strong school library media program, and when compared to students without one, score much higher on standardized tests.*

In response to this growing need from schools and building on last year's program launch of eight school makeovers, Target awarded sixteen schools with a complete library transformation, which included over 2,000 new books, advanced technology, new furnishings, shelving, paint, carpeting, and light construction. In addition, Target has incorporated eco-friendly designs and construction practices into each library makeover, including the use of green certified furniture in partnership with Paragaon and Smith Systems and the use of recycled materials in all locations. Also, Target will gift every student from the sixteen schools with seven brand new books to add to their personal at-home reading collection. In all, more than 750,000 new books have been distributed since the program's inception.

"The Target Volunteers School Library Makeover program combines our commitment to education and volunteerism, two of our key areas of focus when it comes to giving to the local communities our stores serve," said Laysha Ward, president, community relations, Target. "It's a wonderful opportunity for Target team members across the nation to come together and meet the needs of the community, as well as to equip local schools with the best educational supplies and facilities possible."

The school selection criteria for the sixteen makeovers included the percentage of low-income children and overall need for library improvement. The selected schools and the dates each library will be unveiled include**:

The Target Property Development team provided specialized business knowledge through a variety of unique pro bono services, which included leveraging their design, construction and project management expertise to help with the significant updates to the libraries.

"Through our partnership with Target, we are able to increase the magnitude of our giving nationally, ensuring schools throughout the country have the basic resources they need to help their students," said Angie Halamandaris, president, The Heart of America Foundation. "The library is the place in every school where learning is inspired, and by working with Target, we are able to give that gift of passion for education to those who need it most."

In addition to the sixteen fortunate schools that received a complete library makeover, many more will receive help from Target as well. This year, more than 1,600 Target stores and Distribution Centers provided a $500 book award through First Book to a local school of their choice to fund the purchase of books and reading supplies for the fall - just in time to kick-off the new school year.

68-year-old great grandmother Lee Redmond of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, is undoubtedly one of the world's most popular record holders of all time. Having not cut her nails since 1979, she entered the Guinness World Records book in 2002 for the world's longest fingernails on a female pair of hands.

Until now Lee has remained silent about the astonishing chapter in her life; how she has coped with her great loss; the reaction of friends and family and the impact that being stripped of her of her identity has had on her welfare, but she has given an exclusive quote to Guinness World Records about her touching story.

Her unique appearance and bright outlook on life won her a legion of fans throughout the world and she was proud to have achieved such an amazing feat. However, after nurturing and taking care of her nails for 30 years, in February this year, Lee was involved in a car accident which tragically robbed her of her 8.65-m-long (28-ft 4-in) nails and left her with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Although deeply moved by the loss of her nails, which aside from her family, were her most cherished possessions, Lee's remarkable recovery is testament to her great strength of character and the love and support she received from friends and loved ones. Now acknowledging that "there's more to life than nails," Lee has embraced life more than ever as she faces the world, in her words, as an almost completely new person.

In recognition of her record-breaking achievements over the years, and with her full blessing, the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records will carry a striking photograph of Lee pictured alongside fellow American Melvin Booth, the male owner of the longest finger nails (9.05-m-long/29ft 8in), which was taken just a few months prior to her accident.

Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said: "We were saddened to hear the news in February that Lee Redmond had been involved in a car accident, and as a beautiful tribute are delighted to be including the amazing picture of Lee and Melvin in this year's edition. Lee is a truly incredible woman who has had a difficult year and this serves as a celebration of her amazing dedication to the world of record breaking."

Lee has two sons, a daughter, two granddaughters and two grandsons. She is also a proud great-grandmother to two beloved great-grandchildren. Her fingernails are currently 11.5cm/4.5in in length.

Lee Redmond says: "Losing my fingernails has been the most dramatic thing that's happened in my life. I think it was my grandson that said: 'Grandma, they are like your baby: you've taken care of them for 30 years and lost them in a second.' But then when you think about it, you know our whole life could end in a second, not just part of the body, but your whole life."

"The thing that bothered me with losing the fingernails, was that it becomes your identity and I felt like I'd lost part of that, yet I would always say when people would make comments about my fingernails, you know there's more to me than my fingernails."

She continues: "People ask if I'm gonna grow them again and I say, no, it was a once time thing. It took me 30 years to grow them and to get them to that length and they became the world record and I probably won't live for thirty more years."

Remembering the day she met Melvin Booth for the historic photograph Lee said, "I have very, very fond memories from Melvin, he touched my life. He also broke my heart, to see this man who wouldn't even go out of his home. Tears when I left, both he and I. I hope that some day he will realise that he's more than his fingernails. . . I think the difference between Melvin and me, for one thing they didn't keep me from going out in public, and they didn't make me be secluded. I would have never, never chose to keep them if they would have had to keep me away from people or you know, living whatever normal is you know. I hope he will decide to go out and interact with people and I'm sure that he felt the love that I had for him and respect. It wasn't his fingernails; it was him that I cared for."

Lee concludes: "After the accident, not my children, but my great grand babies, they wanted me to glue them back on! I always did everything with them, but now it's so much easier to do things now. The weight is so different, so much. In fact my hands seem to fly with the weight gone."

The NWU's headquarters are at 113 University Place, 6th floor, New York, NY 10003.

b> Today, Former First Lady Laura Bush announced the authors and revealed the poster art for the 2009 Texas Book Festival, which will take place on October 31 and November 1 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. Mrs. Bush, the honorary chair and founder of the Texas Book Festival (TBF), made the announcement at her home during a reception for the organization's supporters. Headlining authors include Buzz Aldrin, Margaret Atwood, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Bryan Burrough, Jeanette Walls, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Taylor Branch.

The TBF is pleased to honor best selling children's writer and San Antonio resident, Rick Riordan with the Bookend Award for his Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, concluded this year with Volume 5, The Last Olympian. The Bookend Award is given to a Texas writer for his or her ongoing and outstanding literary achievement. Past recipients include Cormac McCarthy, Sandra Cisneros, and Horton Foote, among others. Others topping the list of children's authors are Jon Scieszka, Rosemary Wells, Libba Bray, and Judy Schachner. The poster image for the Festival is a photograph, White Owl 2004, by the internationally known, award-winning artist Keith Carter. The full list of Festival authors and poster art is available on www.texasbookfestival.org.

The Texas Book Festival is an organization that has made more than $2.3 million in grants to public libraries since the organization was formed in 1995. In addition, more than 30,000 children in low-income schools have benefited from its literary program, Reading Rock Stars. The two-day Festival is entirely open and free to the public. "The Texas Book Festival is a Texas treasure and one of the premier literary events in the country," said Heidi Marquez Smith, executive director of the Texas Book Festival. This year's list of 210 participating writers reflects the best books in categories ranging from literary fiction to lifestyle titles such as travel and cookbooks. There will be panel conversations mixing the industry's top writers with audience question and answer sessions during every event. In addition, Festival attendees can get their books signed by authors, feast on food from a wide-range of top local eateries, inspire their children with educational author events and activities as well as enjoy live musical entertainment.

Incredible writers such as Sandra Brown, Oscar Casares, Kurt Eichenwald, Blake Bailey, Colson Whitehead, David Wroblewski, and Amanda Eyre Ward will appear at this year's Festival. Other prominent authors attending are Luis Alberto Urrea, Jane Smiley, Harold Evans, Kati Marton, Julia Glass, Gail Collins, and Harold Kushner.

News and political junkies will enjoy Douglas Brinkley, Howard Campbell, Bryan Carlile, and Dave Cullen. Cooking enthusiasts will be inspired by authors Rebecca Rather, Lidia Bastianich, Ellie Krieger, and Guiliano Hazan, who will be demonstrating their skills and talking about their new cookbooks. Lovers of all things Texan will be drawn to Jane Clements Monday, Gary Clark, Wyatt McSpadden, and Michael Marvins. Dr. Cara Natterson and Po Bronson dispense current views on child-rearing, while Katherine Brooks helps those looking to map their career. Hollywood enthusiasts can hear from three Texans who made it big working in the City of Angels: Robert Hinkle, Billy Taylor, and Gary Kent.

Approximately 1500 books were considered, and those chosen are the preeminent titles of 2009. "This is a very literary year in publishing," said Clay Smith, literary director of the Texas Book Festival. "For example, four authors have amazing literary biographies and we are thrilled to have all of them in one panel at the Festival." Book lovers travel from across the country year after year to witness and participate in the extraordinary discussions that are borne from the collaboration of these brilliant authors.

Ricardo Montaner is one of the most celebrated artists in the Spanish-speaking world thanks to his endless search for new styles and, at the same time, his firm roots in the romantic ballad tradition. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela, Ricardo has traveled a road that has taken him to the most prestigious arenas in the continent, from Luna Park in Buenos Aires to Madison Square Garden in New York, from the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City to Teresa Carreno in Caracas.

Although not strictly an autobiography, Lo que no digo cantando focuses on the most transcendent moments and events in the life of its author. Inviting the reader to witness the intimacy of his world tours and concerts, Ricardo concentrates on the experiences that helped shape his personality. He pays particular attention to an incident that took place in a hospital in Montevideo, Uruguay, where an encounter with a little boy made a deep impact on how he sees the world.

Along with his musical career, Ricardo Montaner has worked tirelessly to better the lives of children in Latin America and the United States. In 2007 he was presented with the Espiritu de Esperanza (Spirit of Hope Award) at the Latin Billboard Awards, and he was named the Ambassador of Good Will for Latin America and the Caribbean by UNICEF. He took part in the Paz sin Fronteras (Peace without Borders) event, a concert held at the border between Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia, where he joined Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, Carlos Vives, and Juan Luis Guerra, among others.

Apart from the adoration of his fans and the multiple activities that occupy this true citizen of the world, Ricardo is equally devoted to family life. A father of five, the singer has been married for twenty years to his wife Marlene, who is also involved in Ricardo's artistic efforts as the producer of his video clips. The important details of his family life find room in the book alongside his formative experiences.

In Lo que no digo cantando Ricardo Montaner brings light to all the key moments, treasured over the years, that taught him something new about himself and the world and were crucial in steering his life in the right direction. Readers will undoubtedly benefit from his experiences, too.

Blurb(R), the creative publishing platform that allows anyone to design, publish, market and sell bookstore-quality books, has partnered with Twestival, a global series of events organized by volunteers, to bring people together for a great cause. Blurb and Twestival will publish the first-ever Twestival Global Event book, featuring the stories of the 150 participating cities and their event organizers. Each event will have a two-page spread in the book to tell their story and showcase their official Twestival charity.

The book will be available for purchase in the Blurb Bookstore at http://www.blurb.com/twestival, and Blurb will donate $1 per book sold to a Twestival-approved non-profit.

Furthering the collaboration between Twestival and Blurb, designers are invited to design their own cover for the book. Winning designs will be chosen, and books will be available with a variety of user-created covers. Blurb is also enabling anyone who orders the book to create a personal cover featuring their own photograph for a cover image in place of the various covers offered.

"Twestival wanted to enable participants and fans to visually experience this global event in a totally new way," said Amanda Rose, founder, Twestival. "'Social media meets social responsibility, and by sharing the stories of how teams are working with the causes, we hope to inspire others to give back. Blurb's publishing platform enabled us to share these stories, and allows our community to add their own personal touch to the cover. Tweet. Meet. Give. And then order the book!"

"We love working with creative, passionate communities and organizations," said Teresa Pereira, Director of EU Market Development, Blurb. "Twestival's impact both locally and globally is massive, and we're thrilled be able to extend this impact by publishing a book, raising even more money and awareness for the organizations involved."

Blurb recently announced two major upgrades to its platform. Blurb BookSmart(R) 2.0 includes many new features that give creative professionals full control in the customization of their book layouts, down to the pixel. PDF to Book workflow gives creative professionals complete creative control to design books using the application of their choice, save the file as a PDF, and upload it directly to Blurb. e are all affected by the events of others. If you're wondering "what's next in my life" or "how can I make the right decision," then Thin Threads: Real Stories of Life Changing Moments is just the book to guide you (Kiwi Publishing/November 1, 2009/$17.95). Thin Threads (www.ThinThreads.com) is comprised of 50 stories written by individuals that all show how connected we are with one another. Each story has elements that will enlighten you and motivate you.

Through these stories, Thin Threads captures these "a ha" instances, enabling us, as readers, to realize our own opportunities when we live in the moment. We all experience moments in our lives when we feel we are just hanging on - holding on to a thin thread. Thin threads are stronger than you might think. They lead us, connect us, and best of all, liberate us and allow us to live our lives to the fullest.

In times long gone, when we confronted challenging times, our family and friends were always by our side telling us stories to help guide us on our way. That's how you can think of this book: stories from people who have lessons to share. These are the lessons you didn't know you needed. They appeal to us because they have a hidden meaning in our own lives that becomes more evident as we read through them.

In one story "Reach Out Before It's Too Late," a middle aged woman named Maureen races to the bedside of her childhood friend, not knowing how that encounter would change her life for the better. "Lose Your Mind" is another story that tells of a Wall Street trader who left his job to run a children's charity. His salary is a small fraction of what it once was, but he is a lot happier and feels far more fulfilled. Thin Threads will inspire us to become who we were meant to be.

Bruin Dale is no average, cute-and-cuddly community of talking bears -- Edward C. Whisenant's collection of stories, "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures" (published by AuthorHouse), parodies a homogenous society of grizzly bears in order to address numerous modern-day social, political and economic issues.

"Far too often child readers are presented with ho-hum themes that give children a misleading impression of life," says Whisenant. "[Stingy Bear's Adventures] has a unique perspective."

Venture into Bruin Dale in "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures," 52 humorous and provocative short stories about the antics of a greedy and narcissistic little grizzly cub dubbed "Stingy Bear." Both of his traditional "Abearikan" parents, including his more liberal mother and conservative father who believes in raising Stingy Bear with a "firm paw," chastise Stingy Bear for his indiscretions. Stingy Bear will consider no moral or ethical value in his efforts to obtain a quick buck or satiate his greed, and Father Bear is tireless in efforts to correct his errant ways. Meanwhile, conflicts occur between conservative and liberal ideologies.

Stingy Bear's stories are intended to present real-life dramas with decisions that involve consequences. Stories include "Bearport Security," "Letters to Santa Bear," "The Playbear Magazine" and "The Big Snow Ball" categorized by themes including "Stingy Bear School Days" and "Bruin Dale Bearrorist." "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures" provides moral lessons and expands vocabulary for children while more mature readers will be intrigued by social and political satire in the book. Whisenant writes:

Stingy Bear contemplated the vast fortune he might have earned if he
had sold all of those fish to the owner of Bruingrub Grocery. Then,
he could have earned another merit badge and placed money in the bank
where it could earn interest compounded daily. "This is socialism!"
        he thought, "Nothing but socialism!"

Edward C. Whisenant grew up in a small mountain town in Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a mechanical engineering degree. While there, Whisenant developed an interest in short story fiction from required English courses. The stories of Stingy Bear's adventures were first told to his three children. He has written a sequel to "The Anthology of Stingy Bear's Adventures," which he promises to be "even more poignant and provocative than the first." Anthem Life kicks off Life Insurance Awareness Month by enhancing the support services already available to its group life insurance beneficiaries by offering a new book to help children who are affected by the loss of a loved one - The Healing Book: Facing the Death and Celebrating the Life of Someone You Love (written by Ellen Sabin and published by Watering Can Press).

The Healing Book is a resource that helps children and families express their feelings, ask questions and explore their memories when someone they love has died. It is an activity book, journal and conversation-starter that children can personalize and use in whatever way that best meets their needs during the grieving and remembering process.

"When a loved one dies, it is usually a very difficult time for everyone in the family, especially for children. Therefore, we are glad to offer this helpful book to beneficiaries," said Tom Foran, staff vice president, Product Management/Business Development, Life and Disability. "We want family members to think of us as providing more than a check to them during this challenging time. We want them to see us as a source that offers them valuable tools including grief counseling, legal and financial consultation and other services. We believe The Healing Book is a great complement to the resources we offer to those who are grieving."

Beneficiaries can go to resourceadvisor.anthem.com to order a free copy of this book for their children. In addition, beneficiaries can order free copies for a grandchild, niece or nephew, or a close friend.

In his critically acclaimed new book, Reflections on the Revolution in Europe, columnist Christopher Caldwell frames the issue of Muslim immigration to Europe and argues that Islam has challenged the European way of life at every turn.

Europe has undergone a demographic revolution it never expected. Europe is -- for the first time in its modern history -- a continent of immigrants, with 40 million of the 375 million total European populations living outside their countries of birth. By overestimating its need for immigrant labor and underestimating the culture-shaping potential of religion, Europe has trapped itself in a problem to which it has no obvious solution.

Author Christopher Caldwell will keynote the event. Caldwell is a columnist for the Financial Times, a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, and a Senior Editor at The Weekly Standard. Commenting on the book will be Hillel Fradkin, Senior Fellow and Director of Hudson's Center on Islam, Democracy, and the Future of the Muslim World; Hassan Mneimneh, Visiting Fellow with Hudson Institute and former Director of the Iraq Memory Foundation; and Justin Vaisse, a Senior Fellow with Brookings Institution's Center on the U.S. and Europe and a former adviser on the Policy Planning Staff of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hudson CEO Kenneth Weinstein will introduce the event.

Lunch will be served and copies of the book will be available for sale.

The founders of the National Republican Trust PAC (NRTP), Scott Wheeler and Peter Leitner, are set to release a powerful expose on Barack Obama's unelected shadow government. The book, "Shadow Government: What Obama Doesn't Want You To Know About His Czars," scheduled for release in mid-September is available for order at GOPTrust.com. Several thousand copies have been pre-ordered by the public.

Wheeler and Leitner take readers into the world of Obama's powerful elite, tapped to run the government without standing before the United States Senate for confirmation, as members of any president's cabinet are required to do by the Constitution. "Shadow Government" exposes the radical agenda of the Obama power elite, and why he has handed them power and authority and bypassed the Senate confirmation process.

Many of Obama's 35 "czars" might never survive even the current Democrat majority Senate scrutiny or obtain security clearance.

  • Adolfo Carrion, former Bronx Borough President with a history of taking bribes and putting the interests of his donors above those of the community was named Director of Urban Affairs by Obama.
  • Ron Bloom, labor leader, is at the helm of the unprecedented government interference into the private sector. With no real experience in the auto industry, Bloom is the successor of the even less qualified Steven Rattner, who left his post amidst an SEC investigation into his private equity firm. Bloom is a former investment banker who made his name working with the United Steelworkers union.
  • Van Jones, a self-avowed communist, was appointed Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality (Green Jobs Czar).
  • Kevin Jennings was appointed to be Safe Schools Czar. Jennings has actively promoted homosexuality in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and on college campuses and has distributed graphic material to children as a way to support his crusade.
  • Carol Browner, Obama's Energy Czar, was listed as a commissioner in Socialist International, the worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist and labour parties.
